Even though the Bavarian conservatives, the far-right and Die Linke hold only 27% of the seats in the Bundestag, their appeal demonstrates the scale of the crisis facing the Scholz government since the Constitutional Court sanctioned the federal budget. The chancellor's eventful appearance before the lower house on Tuesday, to the jeers and sneers of the opposition, barely counterbalanced by the ritual applause of his camp, crystallized the noxious atmosphere that grips German political life, which is usually policed.

"You are a plumber of power, and the chancellor's shoes are twice as big for you," said opposition leader Friedrich Merz, accusing his opponent of "jeopardising the prosperity" of the country.
