Brand Studio for YPF Agro
Putting the right nutrient in the right place is key to being efficient, profitable, and sustainable every day. On this road is the San Pedro establishment (belonging to the Dowery company), located 30 kilometers from the city of Gualeguay, in the southeast of the province of Entre Ríos.
Lot of corn.
And along the way, last year he harvested a lot of corn in which he used the Summa YPF Agro comprehensive nutrition system, which allowed him to know the true variability of the lot, its needs in terms of fertilization and differentiated management.
Nicolás Delgado is an agronomist, and responsible for the production of San Pedro, a field that has 1,300 hectares of agriculture, with more than 800 under irrigation with the pivot system.
"The entire field is equipped with the terrace system, to combat water erosion, which would otherwise be very strong in the area (due to its steep undulations and slopes)," says Delgado, who has been working on the farm for 6 years and also has his own agronomic consulting company, called Nivax SRL.
The professional says that the Summa YPF Agro system was used in a field of rainfed corn to be able to evaluate its results in the usual conditions of the area. They did so together with YPF Agro's distributor in the area, Gualeguay Cereales.
Delgado says that in the field they have "a great diversity of soils, from heavier to sandier, which show enormous variability, not only between lots, but also within lots."
He adds that everything has been managed in direct seeding for more than 30 years and that they have the traditional rotation of the area, which is wheat/soybeans of second class, corn and soybeans.
The company that owns the San Pedro establishment has had a sharecropping agreement with Gualeguay Cereales for 3 years, by which the YPF Agro distributor provides a good part of the inputs. As part of that link, the latter proposed to use the Summa system.
Outside of this scheme, the usual management of the field, in terms of fertilization, includes soil analysis prior to each crop. "4 seasons ago we began to do sampling by lot and also in the different environments within each lot," Delgado remarks.
However, with Summa YPF Agro, which they used on that batch of corn harvested last year, things were different.
First, a specialized sampling team came and carried out an intensive survey of the lot, which included grid sampling, with samples every 1.6 hectares; elevation map with high-precision GPS and the Veris harrow was also passed, to determine the characteristics of the soil by means of electroconductivity," says the agronomist.
He adds that these processes were very interesting, because they allowed them to have a very specific x-ray of the batch. "We saw some things, but we didn't quantify them," he sums up.
At the San Pedro farm, near Gualeguay, Entre Ríos, they turned to the Summa YPF Agro comprehensive nutrition system.
For example, he explains that they had some PH problems in the field: some sectors were well below optimal levels, which had an impact on yield. "The large intensive air conditioning that was done with the Summa system allowed us to identify where each type of soil was," says Delgado.
He says that, thanks to Summa's X-ray, they were able to observe that the phosphorus values were very low, which led them to make the decision to make a correction of this nutrient, which they carried out with the use of a pneumatic machine with a bar and section cutting
"The correction was made with a variable application map, to raise the initial values of this nutrient, beyond the fertilization carried out by the crop that would be done in that lot," he said.
At the different times when fertilizers are applied to the crops, both in the lot in which the Summa system was used and in the rest, the San Pedro establishment uses the fertilizer mixtures provided by Gualeguay Cereales, specially designed for their needs.
"We had very good results in the sectors in which we tested the system," says Delgado, who highlights the monitoring and reports carried out by the YPF Agro distributor team in the area.
The engineer maintains that he has no doubt that agriculture by environment is a work scheme that must be incorporated more and more, especially in areas of high variability, such as his own in Entre Ríos.
"The technical proposal of Summa is really very good, particularly useful for us in the environmental characterization stage," says Delgado. And he ends by saying that "it is a very interesting system, which we must continue to bet on".
