The past autumn in southern Germany broke all records: it was the warmest since records began and unusually wet.
Munich – Last autumn in southern Germany was the warmest since weather records began in 1881. That means it was the warmest autumn in 142 years. The average temperature in the Free State between September and November was 11.1 degrees. This is 7.9 degrees above the average for the internationally recognised reference period from 1961 to 1990. At the same time, it was a very wet season. This information was announced by the German Weather Service (DWD) on Wednesday, 29 November, in Offenbach after an initial analysis of its approximately 2000 measuring stations.
Sunny and warm – but also cool and wet: autumn 2023
Despite the exceptionally high temperatures, Bavaria and Thuringia were the coolest regions in Germany in autumn. Nationwide, the average temperature was 11.5 degrees. Even with a cold December, it could be the second warmest year on record in Germany.

Sun lovers in Bavaria were able to enjoy this autumn in particular. "Thanks to the second sunniest September, the autumn sun shone for a whopping 450 hours," the DWD announced. It was particularly sunny in the southeast of Bavaria with more than 500 hours of sunshine. In comparison, the average for the reference period is only 335 hours of sunshine.

Above-average amount of rain in autumn: locally more than 500 litres in the Alps
At the same time, however, there was also an above-average amount of rain. In Bavaria, 245 liters per square meter were measured. The average for the reference period was 204 litres. "In the Alps, locally even more than 500 liters per square meter fell," the DWD reported.
For statistical purposes, meteorologists summarize the seasons in whole months. Therefore, meteorological autumn includes the months of September, October and November. However, the calendrical or astronomical beginning of autumn this year was at the equinox on September 23.
