Peiting – His life was a work of art in all its shades: For decades, SN caricaturist Hubert Pfeffer worked out the punchlines of everyday life for the local newspaper with a sharp pen – always exaggerated, of course, often mercilessly, always with a mischievous wink, always cryptic and clever. Now Hubert Pfeffer, who has always kept his age a secret, has succumbed to a serious illness.
Born in Oberlind in Thuringia, Pfeffer has always known that he is an artist. He goes to Munich, the capital of Bavaria. When he graduated from the School of Arts and Crafts in 1967, the young artist was drawn to distant places. He lived in Switzerland for several years and returned to Bavaria in 1992. Pfeffer finds a home in Peiting – and in the attic of a terraced house, where he takes care of his mother, the muse for everything that has to do with art.
Highlight of his career with his own book "peppered"
His cartoons are not only printed in the local newspaper. Hubert Pfeffer reaches many people with his drawings, in which every detail is worked out down to the smallest detail. His illustrations are printed in books and calendars. A highlight of his career: In 1999 his book "gepfeffert" was published. No title could have been more appropriate, because his drawings are just that.
Pfeffer presents his works in several exhibitions. He is best known for the drawings that made him famous. Few people know that pepper can do things differently. In his studio, he experiments with shapes and colors, and also creates abstract works that are no less profound than his caricatures.
Pfeffer describes himself as a "Francophile"
Hubert Pfeffer describes himself as a "Francophile". Again and again, his travels take him to France – a country that feels like home to him. The cuisine, the French attitude to life, this "laissez-faire": Hubert Pfeffer lives the French way of life. He likes to use French words in conversations, which can make a conversation with him seem weird and funny. A Hubert Pfeffer without a pack of French Gitanes cigarettes: inconceivable! His pride and joy is his miniature car world. He has created more than 600 models himself in filigree craftsmanship with great attention to detail. All models from the French car manufacturer Citroen, of course.
His love for France, his free spirit, but also the knowledge of how valuable life is: all this is also reflected in the title of his last exhibition at the Schongau City Museum in 2017. Hubert Pfeffer chooses "C'est la vie" for this. That's life – a life he lived to the fullest.
Last journey takes artist to beloved France
He remains true to himself until the end. Despite his serious illness, he never puts himself in the spotlight. He tries to cover up how bad he is, jokes, jokes and complains a bit with a typical peppery grin on his face. Pity: A fine mind like him would never have liked such a thing.
