With his acquittal, Éric Dupond-Moretti has earned the right to continue trying to convince them, since he retains his position in the government.

EXCLUSIVE POLL - According to an Odoxa-Backbone Consulting study for Le Figaro, neither the justice system nor the Minister of Justice, who has just been acquitted, have come out of the "Dupond-Moretti affair" any better.

Losing-losing. The day after the acquittal of Éric Dupond-Moretti, tried before the Court of Justice of the Republic for "illegal acquisition of interests", an exclusive poll conducted by Odoxa-Backbone Consulting for Le Figaro* shows that this episode has tarnished the image of justice in the eyes of the French, and has not improved that of the Minister of Justice either, despite his legal victory.

If 55% of those questioned in this study are of the opinion that this trial "is proof of the courage of judges who are not afraid to attack powerful people", the "Dupond-Moretti case" nevertheless illustrates "the politicization of certain judges" for 59% of those questioned - in particular Renaissance and Les Républicains sympathizers - and "does not prove the independence of the judiciary in France" for 52%.

More generally, the French do not have a good image of judges. 69% describe them as "rather politicized". The sympathizers Les Écologistes and La France insoumise are the only ones to believe (at 55%) that these magistrates of the seat are "rather impartial". 77% of respondents also accuse judges of being "rather lax". This reproach is also in the majority on all sides of the political spectrum, even if it is particularly strong - unsurprisingly - among supporters of the National Rally (90%) and conversely much less important in the ranks of LFI (65%).

Retained in government

For his part, Éric Dupond-Moretti may have won the legal battle, but 27% of French people believe that he has come out of this sequence "weakened", compared to 21% who believe that he has come out of it "strengthened". It is the supporters of the National Rally who are the most numerous to think that the former lawyer is "weakened": 37%, against 30% for supporters La France insoumise, 28% for supporters of Les Républicains and 26% for sympathizers of Les Écologistes.

Another lesson from the Odoxa-Backbone Consulting poll is that the popularity of the Minister of Justice, who has been in office since July 2020, is still falling. In May 2021, 39% of French people had a good opinion of him; in December 2022, they were 37%; Today, they are only 30%. Three out of four respondents believe that it is not respected by the magistrates. And only 21% consider him to be a good justice minister.

With his acquittal, Éric Dupond-Moretti has earned the right to continue trying to convince them, since he retains his position in the government. "The Minister of Justice will be able to continue to carry out his work within the government team, in the service of the French people. I am delighted about it," declared Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, while the head of state Emmanuel Macron received the main interested party at the Élysée Palace for a "review" of his "projects" in the hours following the decision of the Court of Justice of the Republic.
