Neither Cristian Ritondo, nor Florencio Randazzo, nor Miguel Ángel Pichetto. President-elect Javier Milei opted for his own deputy to lead the Lower House: Martín Menem, nephew of former President Carlos Menem, son of former Senator Eduardo Menem. A lawyer and businessman, Menem, 48, entered politics two years ago as a provincial deputy in La Rioja, this year he ran for governor and was finally elected national deputy.

This was confirmed this Saturday by Guillermo Francos and announced that Javier Milei will propose Francisco Paoltroni, of La Libertad Avanza, as provisional president of the Senate.

In 2021, Martín Menem was the only liberal candidate that Javier Milei supported outside the City of Buenos Aires. The now president-elect at the time traveled to La Rioja to show himself with him and Menem reached 13% of the votes.

Who is Martin Menem? Two facts: he studied law at the University of Belgrano and before Clarín he defined himself as a "center-right justicialist, with liberal ideas." He usually detaches his surname from the "caste" of which Milei speaks, remarking that "not all politics is caste". He talks a lot about politics with his father Eduardo, the architect of Justicialism in the 90s, and says he consults him to put together the bills.

From the neighborhood of Constitución, he runs the company Gentech, where he produces sports supplements and protein bars, with which he became a supplier to the Argentine Football Association (AFA). It exports products for athletes that pass strict anti-doping rules. However, he describes certain state suppliers as "entrepreneurs".

In these national elections, Martín Menem headed the La Libertad Avanza ticket, which came in second place with 38.1% of the vote, behind former governor Sergio Casas. Thus, the Liberal Party was left with a seat that will be occupied by Menem next week.

A year and a half ago, he revealed to Clarín what links him to the liberal economist: "What unites me with Milei is that he is the one who best interprets Menem's ideas in the '90s, or what happened in the '90s. And that he vindicates it permanently, as no one did and at the time that no one else did, is what unites him the most. Beyond a personal affection I have for him, I've known him for quite some time."

In the same interview, he also criticized Mauricio Macri, saying that "he wanted to do Menemism without Menem" and described Kirchnerism as "the worst catastrophe in Argentina."

With a very good relationship with both the president-elect and Karina Milei, Menem was one of the owners of La Libertad Avanza in the interior of the country. Allied with the liberal economist, he made a difference when Milei spoke of the free carrying of weapons: "Not everyone can access it."

"I consult with my father because he has a doctorate in Parliamentary Procedural Law that is consulted by all the provincial legislatures, all the vice presidents, in general almost all of them, have consulted him regarding parliamentary management and he knows a lot about the management of laws, the treatment. He consulted him a lot for the drafting of the laws," said Martín Menem about his relationship with his father Eduardo.

Among his initiatives, he studied a project to modify the Electoral Law so that if a candidate for office is elected by a party, he or she cannot change that party as soon as he or she takes office. "That the seat belongs to the party, that they cannot be changed and that they cannot betray the free will expressed by a voter," he said.

Martin Menem's name, which circulated strongly on Friday, was confirmed on Saturday by Guillermo Francos, the next interior minister.

"The president-elect has made the decision that in both chambers, both the provisional president of the Senate and the president of the Chamber of Deputies will be men of La Libertad Avanza. And Martín Menem is going to be proposed by the president-elect as a candidate to preside over the Chamber of Deputies," Francos confirmed in an interview with the program "Sábado Tempranísimo" on Radio Mitre.

Francisco Paoltroni, the agricultural businessman from Formosa that Milei will propose as provisional president of the Senate.

"In the case of the Senate, he is going to propose Senator (Francisco) Paoltroni, from Formosa," Francos said.

Martín Menem's link with the AFA

From its production of sports supplements and protein bars, it is a supplier to the AFA. "These products are eaten by all the national team players. We have always been linked to the medical environment, you have to be very careful with the production of these products so that no ingredient is on the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) list. From day one we guarantee doping-free, it is not a minor issue and not only with the AFA, but with the Argentine Athletics Confederation," Menem told Clarín.

Since 1999 he has been working with footballers and had an agreement with the AFA up to and including the World Cup in Qatar. "We've always sold to football clubs, we've been selling to them for a lot. That's where the whole bond begins. The soccer player is somewhat reluctant to consume products he doesn't like," Menem said.

"Other athletes who know how important it is eat anything they are given because they know it's good. It's harder for a footballer. We sold to the AFA until we made a commercial agreement. They used it beforehand and then the trade agreement came," he says.

Those who were left out of the race for the presidency of Deputies

Until now, the poker of names to occupy the presidency of Deputies was placed on deputies of other political forces. Cristian Ritondo of the PRO had done his homework after the Acassuso Pact that brought together the hard wing of the PRO with Milei.

The former Minister of Security of María Eugenia Vidal published a photo with a chainsaw on the day of the runoff, showed himself with Milei in the bunker of the Hotel Libertador and greeted him on the day he was consecrated by the Legislative Assembly.

"It is a decision of Javier Milei, he is the one who decides who he proposes to represent him within Congress. I have the commitment for change, for the changes that are coming in Argentina, I asked for the vote for Javier Milei for the second round," Ritondo had said.

On the day of the Legislative Assembly, the one who was absent was Florencio Randazzo, another who sounded like he was running for the position based on the good relationship between Juan Schiaretti and Mieli. Those close to the former Minister of the Interior and Transport assured that it was not because he had a medical appointment and because he did not want to "add noise" to the speculation about the future authorities of the Chamber.

The Auditor General of the Nation and elected deputy, Miguel Ángel Pichetto, also sounded, and even in some corridors the name of Carolina Piparo was mentioned, as compensation for the sloppiness of announcing her to the ANSeS and then taking it down.
