Russia is relying on a new weapon in the war against Ukraine: kamikaze ships. Ukraine is also already using similar equipment.

Moscow/Kiev – According to British information, Russia is intensifying its efforts to construct unmanned kamikaze ships. These are to be used in the Ukraine war. Mikhail Danilenko, the head of the KMZ defense contractor, recently announced that tests with drone ships will be carried out as part of the "special military operation" – the name given to the war in Russia. The goal is to start mass production by 2024.

This was announced by the British Ministry of Defense on Friday (December 1). The boats could carry up to 600 kilograms of ammunition, Danilenko said.

Putin is arming itself: Ukraine already relied on unmanned ships in attacks in the Black Sea

Ukraine had repeatedly used unmanned ships, which resemble speedboats loaded with explosives, against Russian targets in the Black Sea or in the ports of the annexed Crimean peninsula. The weapon has become a key capability in the maritime sphere in the hands of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, it was said in London.

The UK Ministry of Defence has been publishing daily information on the course of the war since the start of the war against Ukraine in February 2022. Moscow accuses London of disinformation. However, Putin's armament with unmanned kamikaze ships for Russia's armed forces is unlikely to be one of them.

Ukraine war: Bundeswehr trains Ukrainians

Meanwhile, the Bundeswehr has trained a second group of Ukrainian soldiers on the Patriot anti-aircraft system. The training of the approximately 70 men and women was about to be completed after more than six weeks. The defense of Ukrainian airspace is a central task, said Lieutenant General Andreas Marlow, commander of the multinational training command ("Special Training Command"), during a site visit. He pointed out that Russian attacks are aimed specifically at civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.

On Friday, Marlow attended training at an Air Force site in Germany, which is not to be publicly named. The training command is based in Strausberg near Berlin and coordinates the work of the EU Training Mission (EUMAM) for Ukraine, which was launched more than a year ago. The Bundeswehr and its partners plan to have trained about 10,000 Ukrainians in various areas of responsibility by the end of the year. (skr/dpa)
