In Como, which in the ranking of the most crowded penitentiaries ranks third, with 421 inmates on roll call compared to 226 places (plus 186%), in the evening there were serious riots, with some inmates who would have devastated an entire section also setting fire to mattresses and furnishings, so much so that the intervention of the fire brigade was necessary. The Penitentiary Police, who also intervened with operators called back to duty from rest or after completing their shift, restored order. However, there would be some intoxicated officers and at least five of them who would have had to seek treatment in the city's emergency room. This was said by Gennarino De Fazio, secretary general of the UILPA Penitentiary Police.
"In Como, however, in addition to the serious prison overcrowding, it is also necessary to deal with the chasm in the staff of the Penitentiary Police which has about 200 agents in spite of a need quantified by the Department of Penitentiary Administration itself in at least 353 units, with a deficit of 40%. It may also be for this reason that the institute during the riots was for a long time guarded, externally, by other law enforcement agencies," explains the union leader. "There is no need for more proclamations and placebos, the Government should issue a prison decree for immediate extraordinary recruitment in the Penitentiary Police Corps, which is missing a total of 18 thousand units, as the main factor for the solution of the numerous problems that grip the system. Procrastination with further palliatives risks frustrating, even beyond any good intention, what little profit we are beginning to glimpse in a prison apparatus abandoned to itself by too many years of bad government", concludes De Fazio.
