The mayor of Eichenau and district councillor Peter Münster has surprisingly resigned from the FDP. The reason for this is profound differences of opinion with the Upper Bavarian FDP district executive.

Eichenau/Munich – He is a liberal veteran: Peter Münster has been a member of the Bavarian FDP since 1986 or 1988, he doesn't remember exactly. Since 1990, he has been a member of the municipal council for the Liberals, and since 2016 he has been one of only five full-time FDP mayors in Bavaria. Or rather, now there are only four.

On Friday, Münster and another liberal, Munich district councillor Barbara Countess Baudissin-Schmidt, posted the resignation letter in the mailbox of the FDP state office in Munich. "It's sad, but there's no other way," says Münster. "We are committed to our liberal aspirations."

The Basis

Baudissin-Schmidt's resignation is also likely to hurt the FDP. She was previously (with Ajay Singh) chairwoman of the Upper Bavaria FDP. The background to this is a dispute over a cooperation between the three-member FDP squad in the Upper Bavarian district parliament and a representative of the lateral thinker party "Die Basis". With the ÖDP and the Bavarian Party, a so-called joint committee was entered into.

Münster justifies this by pointing out that otherwise the FDP would not have been able to get a seat on one of the nine-member committees. The large district council, in which all 82 elected district councillors sit, usually meets only twice a year. The main work takes place in the smaller committees, the small FDP would have been left empty-handed if it had not formed the committee community.

The fact that the only elected district councillor of the "grassroots" is also present here had alienated the youth organisation Young Liberals (Julis) in particular. They succeeded in getting the district executive of the Upper Bavaria FDP to issue an ultimatum to Münster and his comrades-in-arms with a majority decision: the committee community must be terminated by 31 December.

Social policy

However, the self-confident mayor does not see this. "As a freedom-loving person, I reject ultimatums," he says. Of course, according to Münster, the "base" has "a whole range of content that belongs more to the right-wing fringe. So we are aware that cooperation is difficult." But in the district parliament it is purely about social policy, and in his opinion the "grassroots" representative is politically unsuspecting.
