This is an inquiry that could have seriously escalated. This Sunday around 23:30 p.m., a crew from the anti-crime brigade (BAC) patrolling the town of Pennes-Mirabeau crossed paths with a suspicious car. It was during checks that the police discovered that it was in fact reported stolen. According to a police source, the vehicle had already been spotted on several break-ins. The driver was also wanted for armed robbery.
The police then decided to discreetly follow the stolen vehicle, which began to drive on the motorway towards Aix-en-Provence. It was when his driver stopped to fill up at a gas station that the officers decided to go to his side. The man then took refuge in the passenger compartment of his car by locking its doors. One of the officers then tried to smash one of the windows of the vehicle with the butt of his service weapon, but was unsuccessful. The suspect took the opportunity to flee.
The robber had threatened a town hall employee
Chased at full speed on the highway, the fugitive took all the risks to try to escape the police. The man eventually lost control of his vehicle, crashing into a curb and swerving one of his tires. Lost for lost, he extricated himself from his car and ran in an attempt to escape the BAC officers who were chasing him on foot.
The police finally managed to apprehend the respondent after a violent confrontation, using their stun gun to neutralize the fugitive who tried to resist arrest. According to a police source, the man was considered dangerous, known for having threatened an employee of the town hall of Gignac-la-Nerthe with a handgun during a break-in.
The robber was taken into custody on charges of "concealment of theft", "refusal to comply", but also "endangering others" and "driving under the influence of drugs". The stolen vehicle was seized for investigation.
