2023-12-04T09:48:17.809Z

Highlights: France is the country with the most time zones in the world. Although less extensive, France surpasses the United States or Russia in this area. China, on the other hand, has only one time zone – despite being the third largest country by land area, at 9.597 million square kilometers. The time zone system may seem self-evident to us today, but it has not always existed. It was not until 1911 that France was officially attached to the Codified Universal Time system.

Although less extensive, France surpasses the United States or Russia in this area. How can this be explained?

"How many hours of difference will we have?" You've probably already asked that loved one who was going to a foreign country. And, depending on the time of year, the time difference between one destination and another is not the same. Thus, in summer, Paris and Sydney are ten hours apart. In winter, the two cities are only nine hours apart. And it is France that has the record for the highest number of time zones. Indeed, the homeland of human rights has 13 of them.

Metropolitan France and Corsica operate on the UTC+01:00 time zone. French Polynesia operates in several time zones. The Society Islands, Tuamotu Islands, and Austral Islands operate on UTC-10:00, while the Marquesas Islands operate on UTC-09:30. Finally, the Gambier Islands depend on UTC-09:00. Clipperton Island, nicknamed Passion Island and located west of Mexico, depends on UTC−08:00. As for Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin, they operate on UTC−04:00. Guyana and Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon depend on UTC−03:00. Mayotte, on the other hand, depends on UTC+03:00. Reunion Island, the Scattered Islands of the Indian Ocean and the Crozet Archipelago are timed to UTC+04:00. The islands of Saint-Paul and New Amsterdam and the Kerguelen Islands depend on UTC+05:00. Adélie Land, from UTC+10:00 and New Caledonia, from UTC+11:00. Finally, the Wallis and Futuna Islands depend on UTC+12:00.

Behind France, Russia and the United States each have eleven time zones. China, on the other hand, has only one time zone – despite being the third largest country in the world by land area, at 9.597 million square kilometers.

A system that appeared in 1884

While the time zone system may seem self-evident to us today, it has not always existed. The UTC standard, which stands for Universal Time Coordination, is now used worldwide for the time of the various countries of the world, and only appeared in 1884 at the International Meridian Conference in Washington, on the initiative of the Scottish engineer Sandford Fleming. Before it was introduced, each country had its own system for setting the time. In France, each city chose the time it was according to the position of the sun.

There are 24 time zones, each of which has been assigned to a specific geographical area. Most of the time, the boundaries of each time zone correspond to the longitude lines or borders of countries. The starting point of the very first time zone is the Greenwich Meridian in London, which is located at 0° longitude. It was not until 1911 that France was officially attached to the Codified Universal Time system.
