(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 4 - Italy supports the Council of Europein its role to protect and defend human rights, Deputy Premierand Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Monday.
   This is "all the more true at such a difficult time as thepresent, with two wars on Europe's doorstep and many othersbeing fought elsewhere in the world but about which too littleis said," said Tajani at the meeting of the Monitoring Committeeof the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe inItaly's Lower House.
   "The presence of a monitoring mechanism is a tool to verify whatis happening in many parts of the world, and it must be a voicethat is then heard," he continued.
   On the war sparked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Tajani saidMoscow must realise that "very serious crimes (have been) committed and the issue of compensation for the damage caused isalso a precondition for a just peace".
   "Ukraine cannot be bent, not even with the arrival of winter;and in fact we have taken action precisely in order to help thecivilian population, to prevent them from dying of cold,"continued the minister. "We are in the front line for the reconstruction of Ukraine,which we will continue to support in military and civilmatters," said Tajani.
   On the war between Israel and Hamas, Italy's chief diplomatreiterated his condemnation of the "heinous crimes" committed bythe Islamist militant group but also called on Israel, "in itsaction to destroy Hamas bases, (to) respect the civilianpopulation that has nothing to do with Hamas terrorists".
