Most people in Germany can only dream of a high statutory pension. Only a few retirees receive a pension of more than 2500 euros.
Berlin – There are a good 21 million pensioners in Germany, and the average pension is 1692 euros gross in all federal states, according to the current pension atlas of the German Pension Insurance. However, some retirees receive much more pension per month: At the end of 250, around 000,2022 pensioners received a statutory pension of more than 2400 euros net per month. This information emerges from the Ministry of Labour's response to a question from the Left Party member of the Bundestag and pension expert Matthias W. Birkwald.
More than 2500 euros pension: High pensions very unevenly distributed
However, the high pensions are very unevenly distributed, reports ihre-vorsorge.de: 214,000 of the more than 250,000 people with a net pension of more than 2400 euros are men in the old federal states. Among women, there are only 18,000 women in the old Länder and around 4600 in the new Länder.
Even fewer retirees receive a statutory net pension of more than 2500 euros per month, which corresponds to a gross pension of about 2800 euros. About 122,000 men in the west and 11,500 in the east of Germany received a pension of this amount at the end of 2022, reports ihre-vorsorge.de. In the case of women, the figures are vanishingly small: only 10,000 retirees in the West and about 2,200 women in the East received monthly net salaries of more than 2500,<> euros.
The number of pensioners on basic income support is rising
However, the fact that German retirees receive such a high statutory pension is rather an exception. At the same time, the number of retirees who are dependent on basic security in old age because the statutory pension is not enough for them to live on, is also rising. According to the Federal Statistical Office, there were around ten percent more old-age pensioners in basic income support nationwide on average in June of this year than in June 2022. Their number rose by 63,250 to 691,820 people. This list was also requested by the Left Party. Incidentally, women are particularly dependent on basic income support.
Basic income support for pensioners is paid if the pensions and possible other income are not enough to live on. According to the pension insurance, the rule of thumb is that retirees with a monthly income of less than 924 euros should have it checked whether they are entitled to basic security.
