One person died and at least three homes were burned in a fire early Sunday morning in the town of Sylmar, California, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) reported.

Authorities responded to an emergency call in the early morning, but the situation became complicated for firefighters who had to adopt a "defensive operation mode" extinguishing the fire from outside because the flames fired "heavy ammunition" into one of the homes, they reported.

Although they initially said there were no injuries, they later found the remains of a person in the rubble. The Los Angeles Police Department's (LAPD) bomb squad also responded to the scene of the fire, which took firefighters more than an hour to put out.

Neighbors called 911 shortly after 4:30 a.m. to report the flames, the local NBC News station reported. When crews arrived, three structures were burning and ammunition began to explode from the fire.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said its crews will work throughout the day with investigators, police officers and the medical examiner's office "to ensure risk reduction that allows for a safe, thorough and methodical investigation of the fire scene, and the transfer of the deceased person."
