It is the worst result of all time: the renowned Pisa study shows massive educational gaps among German young people. The business community reacts with horror.

Berlin - Experts are shocked by the poor performance of German pupils in the international Pisa comparative test. The decline in performance is "cause for great concern," said Ludger Woessmann, head of the Center for the Economics of Education at the Ifo Institute in Munich, on Tuesday. "Good education is the most important basis for our prosperity."

In math and reading, 15-year-olds' performance is a full school year behind where they were four years ago. "There has never been such a decline in educational outcomes," said Woessmann. The decline in performance, as seen in mathematics in particular, will cost Germany around 14 trillion euros in economic output in the long term by the end of the century.

Pisa study: Employers' association calls for a "revolution"

The Confederation of German Employers' Associations (BDA) called for an "almost revolutionary new beginning in our education system", as its president Rainer Dulger explained. "The current educational standards, but also the training of teachers, must be put to the test." Digitalisation in schools must be secured reliably and in the long term. The all-day school should be used specifically for individual support.

For the employers' association Gesamtmetall and the IG Metall trade union, the results are a warning signal. "Schools must be given the priority that education deserves," the collective bargaining parties of the metal and electrical industry emphasized in a joint statement. "This applies to general education schools as well as to vocational schools." The decline in performance in mathematics and science skills is particularly worrying. These are essential, especially for the metal and electrical industry, which is dependent on technological pioneering, whether in an engineering degree or training in the skilled occupations of industry.

OECD calls for more equal opportunities

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) advises improving the state of education and equal opportunities in the German school system. For example, pre-school education must be expanded in order to reduce social achievement gaps and create greater equality of opportunity, OECD education expert Francesco Avvisati told Reuters news agency. In addition, the teaching profession should be converted into a profession with attractive career opportunities in order to be able to close existing personnel gaps.

The performance of German pupils has deteriorated significantly during the Corona period and is only average by international standards. In 2022, 15-year-olds' results were worse than in 2018 in mathematics as well as in reading skills and science, according to the Pisa study by the OECD group of industrialized countries. What's more: "Overall, the 2022 results in all three competence areas are the lowest values ever measured within the framework of Pisa," said the study, in which Germany has been participating since 2000.
