It was expected. And it didn't disappoint. Grand Theft Auto VI, the latest from Rockstar studios, was unveiled on Monday night through a trailer that is already breaking all viewing records. On Youtube, this Tuesday, December 5 at 23 p.m. French time, the video game event has already garnered more than 90 million views on the official channel of its publisher, Rockstar, breaking the record for the most viewed non-musical video in less than 24 hours on the platform, held until now by the Youtuber MrBeast (46 million).
In addition, the official trailer has already generated 8.7 million likes (!), 700,000 comments and has arrived, without batting an eyelid, at the top of the platform's "trends". In addition to these 90 million views, we must also add the multiple reruns of the trailer on specialized media channels, such as Gamespot (15 million views), IGN (3 million views)... as well as the thousands of videos and live streams reacting and analyzing every detail of the trailer. Some videographers list in front of hundreds of thousands of viewers, on Twitch or other streaming platforms, the number of animal species already spotted, while others list the different and numerous physiognomies of the characters populating the fictional city of Vice City, inspired by Miami and in which the game will take place.
These monstrous figures have already tickled the 100 million views of the official trailer of GTA V, its predecessor, which has put a lot of attention to the... Twelve years to reach this milestone. However, GTA VI is not expected to break the record for the most viewed video on YouTube in less than 24 hours, held by a music video by South Korean boy band BTS (108 million views).
Built for records
In any case, Grand Theft Auto VI seems to be cut out for records. Rockstar was able to attract the attention of players from the first sign of life of the title, in early November, ten years after the release of GTA V. In a tweet, the publisher announced the upcoming arrival of a trailer. The post had been viewed more than 145 million times in 24 hours, and liked by more than 1.4 million people.
In early December, another message from Rockstar warned of the release date and time of the first trailer for GTA VI. The post, simplistic, set against a tropical backdrop, had received 1.8 million likes within 24 hours. No other game gets as much engagement on social media. The image had gone so viral that many other studios and publishers picked up on the graphic style of the publication to tease an announcement.
We therefore logically expect a future sales record for the latest iteration of Grand Theft Auto, the cult saga of video games, which has sold more than 405 million copies worldwide since its birth in 1997. GTA V alone, released in 2013, reached 2023 million copies sold in 185. This makes it the second best-selling game of all time, behind Minecraft. However, we will have to be patient before buying the game, which will make us play a female main character for the first time: it is not expected to be released before 2025, on Playstation 5 and Xbox Series.
