Because of a selfie, a group of four tourists capsized with their gondola in Venice. The gondolier had tried to warn her against a daring manoeuvre.

Venice – The lagoon city of Venice on the Italian Adriatic Sea is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Especially in the winter half-year, the "Serenissima" has its charms, especially then there is not as much activity as in the summer months.

A visit to Venice also includes a gondola ride through the canals of the city, built on stilts in the lagoon. You glide under the bridges, and for a tip, the gondiolier sometimes contributes a song.

On Sunday, however, the boatswain tried to make himself known to four of his guests for other reasons: He was steering through the canal called Rio Verona, near the famous thetar La Fenice, when the four guests began to take selfies while crossing under a bridge.

When all four of them pushed on one side at once, he tried to make it clear to them loudly that they had to be evenly distributed in the gondola, otherwise disaster would threaten. However, the four guests, who according to Italian reports come from Asia, did not understand this or did not listen. The inevitable happened.

The gondola lay on its side, the center of gravity was so far on the edge that the flat boat finally tipped over and capsized. All four holidaymakers and the gondolier landed in the currently 14 degrees cold water of the Venetian lagoon. The water in the canals is not always the cleanest, as there is no sewerage. There are only decentralised septic tanks, which are pumped out sporadically, the overflow water loads in the canals.

The gondolier himself helped the tourists who were kicking in the water back to the mainland, the Rio di Verona is not particularly deep. However, it is currently only five degrees plus. The tourists must have been quite cold. About the consequences of the disaster, the portal rainews.it writes: "Nothing dramatic in view of the shallow water depth, but a lot of fear and, above all, the cold and the weight of the heavy, soaked clothes made it difficult for the guests of the city to recover."

Gondola capsizes because of selfie: the ridicule of Italians on social networks is great

On social networks such as Facebook, TikTok or YouTube, two videos of the incident go viral, the mockery is caustic: "Mobile phones worth at least 5000 euros thrown away, how much they must have suffered," writes a user on YouTube. "A nice refreshment, let's see if they get it now," commented one user on Facebook "A great memory, and then also got into the news!" another said. "You need to fasten your seatbelt before you set off," jokes the next. And one lady laments: "Venice has become a big playground, the city has lost all its magic."

Less fortunate than the capsized Venice tourists on Sunday was a diver who died during a wreck trip near Genoa. In the summer, the Harry Potter publisher died during a boat trip off the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy.
