The largest piece of amber ever found in 1991 was five square meters in size and weighed about 70 kilograms. However, amber was discovered in Indonesia and is now worth more than $1.5 billion in the U.S. and around $3 billion worldwide.

Patrizia Krämer can count herself lucky: she found enormous quantities of amber on the North Sea coast. One reason for this could be the weather.

St. Peter-Ording – Squalls and uncomfortable weather are currently dominating the North Sea. But even though most people like to crawl under the covers with a cup of tea at this time of year, there is one group of people for whom this weather has some treasures in store: amber collectors. On Wednesday, 29 November, Patrizia Krämer will also be heading outside to the beach of St. Peter-Ording. And returns home with a sensational find.

Huge find on North Sea coast: Amber washed up due to winter storm

"It was worth it again today," Krämer writes matter-of-factly in a Facebook group of the North Sea town, posting a photo of a huge amber that fills almost the entire palm of her hand. The honey-yellow gemstone is causing excitement in the comments section. "Uiih it's beautiful!" writes one user, while many others congratulate shopkeepers for their find.

The question of where it was found also arises. When asked by kreiszeitung.de, Krämer explains that she had tried her luck below the "Noah's Ark" restaurant. "This was the fourth time we had searched for amber," she says. Their sensational find is certainly also related to the North Sea weather. This is because amber experts know that the gemstones wash ashore during winter storms, especially in the dark months.

"Really lucky": Huge amber find at St. Peter-Ording successful

Krämer's find is not quite as big as the largest piece of amber ever found. As the website of the coastal town informs, the huge find par excellence was made in 1991. On a research expedition, Dieter Schlee found an amber that was five square meters in size and weighed about 70 kilograms. However, amber was discovered in Indonesia.

But also in St. Peter-Ording some gemstones can be fished out of the sea. For the great stone of Krämer was by no means their only one. She had found many, many more smaller ambers on Wednesday evening at the North Sea and draped them on her sink to dry. "At the moment, it's really worth it," explains Krämer. There are many small ambers. The big one, however, "was really lucky."
