Special observations were reported from Bavaria after the heavy snowfalls – because the animal world had apparently also been surprised by it.

Munich – The early and sometimes violent onset of winter in large parts of Bavaria has also surprised many birds. For example, flocks of white storks in the snow have recently attracted attention. This was announced by Angelika Nelson from the State Association for Bird and Nature Conservation in Bavaria (LBV) on Monday, 4 December, in Hilpoltstein, Middle Franconia.

"Rare phenomenon" after the onset of winter in Bavaria

A special observation was reported from the Nördlingen region in Swabia: a black stork has joined a group of well-known white storks. "The fact that individual black storks spend the winter in Bavaria is a rare phenomenon so far," said LBV stork expert Oda Wieding.

Autumn was particularly mild this year - a development that has been apparent for years in the wake of the climate crisis. Therefore, more and more bird species are trying to spend the winter in Bavaria, or they are postponing their journey to the south. "But they're also taking a certain amount of risk," Nelson said. The heavy snowfall makes it difficult for the animals to find food. However, it is normal and an indicator of a healthy nature for animals to take risks in order to gain potential benefits. "A few snowy days shouldn't be a problem for most birds."

After the onset of winter: Supporting birds with bird feeders

If you still want to support the birds, you can, for example, build a bird feeder in the garden, according to the LBV. This is particularly beneficial for grain-eating bird species such as nuthatches and titmice. (kam/dpa)
