Highlights: Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris regained its cross, affixed to the top of its spire on Wednesday. The spire, identical to the previous one, designed by the 19th-century architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and which collapsed in the fire, has recently become a marker of the progress of reconstruction. The laying of the cross comes two days before a visit by President Emmanuel Macron, organized a year to the day before the planned reopening for worship.

Little by little, the monument returned to its original form. Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris regained its cross, affixed to the top of its spire, on Wednesday, AFP journalists near the building ravaged by fire in 2019 said.

The cross was lifted into the air by a crane shortly after 15 p.m. and installed at the top of the spire, whose silhouette has been visible in recent days through the scaffolding.

The laying of the cross comes two days before a visit by President Emmanuel Macron, organized a year to the day before the planned reopening for worship and the visit of this masterpiece of Gothic art built between the 12th and 14th centuries.

The spire, identical to the previous one, designed by the 19th-century architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and which collapsed in the fire, has recently become a marker of the progress of reconstruction.

A rooster will be added to the structure

It "has now risen (...) based on Viollet-le-Duc's drawings. It is an extremely clever assembly of wood, covered with a sheet of lead and surmounted, at the top, by a crown, a rooster and a cross, the whole rising to 96 m," the Élysée detailed on Wednesday morning.

What a great moment today! This spire that rises into the sky to land delicately in its place. I am amazed and filled with joy and gratitude for everyone who makes this possible. ⁦@notredameparis⁩ ⁦@rebatirNDP⁩ pic.twitter.com/qOgDNxJ14U

The rooster was not visible on top of the cross on Wednesday. He "has not yet been replaced," according to the Élysée, which said he "will be blessed" according to Catholic tradition "in the coming days, during a ceremony separate from the visit" of the head of state on Friday.

"It's a new rooster", the "rooster rescued from the flames (which) is destined to be exhibited" in a future museum.

Last week, the head of reconstruction, Philippe Jost (who succeeded General Jean-Louis Georgelin after his sudden death this summer), indicated that once the spire had reached its 96 m, the stage would come of "the lead cover" so that "the scaffolding, which largely hides the spire, can come down".
