Highlights: Commissioner Rabah Souchi has applied for the open position of deputy director of the municipal police. He is accused of having given "inappropriate" orders that led the police to charge and throw Geneviève Legay, an activist from the citizens' association Attac, to the ground. She was unconscious for several hours with fractured skulls and broken ribs. The city is waiting for confirmation of the secondment requested from the Ministry of the Interior and the opinion of the ethics commission before starting this recruitment.

Rabah Souchi, who is due to go on trial in January in Lyon, has been selected by the jury to become deputy director of the Nice municipal police.

The police commissioner who ordered the charge of a septuagenarian "yellow vest", Geneviève Legay, who caused serious injuries in March 2019, is in the process of joining the municipal police of Nice, the mayor's office announced on Wednesday. "Commissioner Rabah Souchi has indeed applied for the open position of deputy director of the municipal police," the city's director general of services, Bastien Nespoulous, said in a statement. "He was selected by the jury on 28 September," he added, without specifying the reasons for the controversial choice.

But recruitment is not definitive. The city "is waiting for confirmation of the secondment requested from the Ministry of the Interior and the opinion of the ethics commission before starting this recruitment," said the former chief of staff of Christian Estrosi, now "DGS".

Originally from Hauts-de-France, arrived in Nice in 2017, Rabah Souchi, 54, is to be tried in January in Lyon for "complicity in violence by a person holding public authority", in his capacity as operational head of security during a prohibited but calm demonstration on March 23, 2019 in Nice. He is accused of having given "inappropriate" orders that led the police to charge and throw Geneviève Legay, an activist from the citizens' association Attac, to the ground. She was unconscious for several hours with fractured skulls and broken ribs.

The images of the grey-haired protester, standing with a rainbow flag in her hand, then lifeless on the ground, surrounded by police officers, caused a stir. The city of Nice's desire to include the commissioner among the 550 officers of the municipal police, revealed by the daily Nice-Matin, has provoked others.

"Both Rabah Souchi's personality and career lead me to firmly oppose his recasting within our municipal police," said Philippe Vardon, a municipal councillor close to Éric Zemmour and Marion Maréchal. "This upcoming recruitment clearly poses an ethical problem and does not bode well for what could become of the leadership of the municipal police of Nice," Alternative communiste 06 joined him for once. Souchi could not immediately be reached for comment.
