The GDL strike on Friday also hits Munich hard. The Munich S-Bahn will be "massively affected". However, some lines are supposed to run.
Munich – Long-distance, regional and local transport – since 22 p.m., the big rail strike has also been going on in Munich. It is the result of faltering collective bargaining between the German Locomotive Drivers' Union (GDL) and Deutsche Bahn. This means that the S-Bahn trains in Munich will also be on strike. While travellers will probably still be able to cope with the cancellations on Thursday evening, the rail chaos will hit all commuters in the Bavarian capital with a full broadside on Friday (8 December). DB is trying to maintain at least an emergency offer. Which S-Bahn lines run at which intervals – an overview.
Rail strike in Munich: S-Bahn expects "delays and train cancellations" until Saturday night
Officially, the strike called by the GDL in the transport companies goes on until 22 p.m. However, it is unlikely that normal operations will return to time with the tenth gong on Friday evening. "Until the night from Friday (8 December) to Saturday (9 December)" there will be "delays and train cancellations" on the S-Bahn lines in Munich, the Munich S-Bahn informed late Thursday evening.
But: The company wants to offer emergency operation of most S-Bahn lines despite "massive impairments". Different bars are planned for this purpose.

S-Bahn lines in Munich: This is how S1, S2, S3 and Co. run on Friday
In addition to a cancellation (line S20), the S-Bahn lines in Munich are running much less frequently due to the GDL strike on Friday. A 60-minute interval is planned on most lines. This applies to lines S1, S2, S3, S4, S6, S7. More often, the trains will only run on certain sections of the route. For example, the S2 will run between Dachau and Markt Schwaben every 40 minutes.
Things get a little more complicated with the S8. It runs every 60 minutes between Herrsching and Germering-Unterpfaffenhofen, every 20 to 40 minutes between Germering-Unterpfaffenhofen and Pasing, and finally every 20 minutes between Pasing and the airport.
Map on the day of the strike: S-Bahn lines in Munich at a glance
- Lines S1 / S2 / S3 / S4 / S6 / S7 run every 60 minutes
- The S2 line runs between Dachau and Markt Schwaben every 40 minutes
- The S8 line runs every 60 minutes between Herrsching and Germering-Unterpfaffenhofen, every 20 to 40 minutes between Germering-Unterpfaffenhofen and Pasing, and every 20 minutes between Pasing and the airport
- The S20 line is completely omitted.
