If you travel on New Year's Eve, you usually don't choose the beach and the sea, but a destination where there is as much going on as possible - this is also reflected in the trend travel destinations that the online travel agent Opodo has determined according to the industry portal Reisereporter. The New Year's Eve hotspots almost invariably include large cities:

  • London
  • Barcelona
  • Bangkok
  • Paris
  • Istanbul
  • Palma de Mallorca
  • Vienna
  • Tenerife
  • Lisbon
  • Gran Canaria

As it turns out, travellers are also willing to travel longer distances to spend New Year's Eve away from home. For example, the Thai metropolis of Bangkok is among the top 10 most popular New Year's Eve destinations. On top of that, travellers seem to be more drawn to the south, as the trendy destinations of Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Tenerife and Gran Canaria show. According to Opodo, New Year's Eve tourists take an average of seven to eleven days for their trip.

If you don't necessarily want to travel to the classic New Year's Eve destinations, you could also be inspired by the underdogs, who have received a big increase this year. According to Reisereporter, Opodo noted that Germans' bookings for the Finnish capital Helsinki have increased by 89 percent. 70 percent more German tourists have opted for Dubai, while Athens can look forward to a 58 percent increase in bookings.
