The FS group will invest €13.4 billion in Calabria by 2032. This was announced by FS during a press conference, explaining that the interventions will concern "electrification and upgrading of rail and road infrastructure, new regional trains to lower the average age of the fleet, Intercity connections with hybrid trains and redevelopment of stations and urban areas". Specifically, the Ionian railway line will be affected with "electrification interventions to increase reliability and speeding up" as well as the Salerno-Reggio Calabria line on the high-speed front. As for the roads managed by Anas, Fs explains, the interventions will concern "the SS106 Jonica, the A2 motorway and the completion of the SS 182. The construction of the 'Santomarco' tunnel is also planned, which will connect Cosenza to the high-speed network". The focus will then be on railway stations, with the aim of "improving their functionality and decorum, breaking down architectural barriers to improve accessibility to the train, enhancing information to the public". The new "Central Post of Reggio Calabria" will also be built, thus locating the new "Control and command of railway circulation" of the entire south. The plan to eliminate level crossings also continues: to date, work is underway to eliminate 11 level crossings, while studies and designs are underway for another 21. The investments, explains FS, derive from the group's business plan but also from NRRP funds, and will cover all the group's business hubs: infrastructure, passengers, urban and logistics. As for trains, by 2025 more than 50% of regional trains will be renewed, with an average age that will increase from 29 years in 2018 to 9 in 2026. In addition, Calabria has also been chosen as a pilot region in the experimentation of alternative fuels. In this regard, "since last summer," explains FS, "five trains have been running on some lines, including the brand new Blues hybrid regional train, powered by HVO biofuel supplied by Eni. For the medium and long-distance offer, there are currently 16 Trenitalia Frecce connections to and from Calabria with stops at 10 stations, while there are 25 Intercity connections to and from Calabria, two of which are periodic, in addition to the four bus connections. In the first months of 2024, hybrid Intercity trains will be presented for connections on the Reggio Calabria-Taranto line".
