Guatemala's public prosecutor's office said on Friday that it considered the presidential election won in August by Bernardo Arévalo to be "null and void" because of alleged irregularities at the end of the first round.

Prosecutor Leonor Morales told a news conference that investigations showed that there had been "anomalies in the drafting of the minutes of the closing of the vote count" and that, as a result, "the elections of the president, vice-president, deputies (...) shall be null and void by operation of law'. The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) had validated the elections and confirmed that Bernardo Arévalo could take office on 14 January as planned.
