Police have identified a man as a person of interest in the homicide of Lizbeth Medina, a 16-year-old Latina cheerleader who was found dead this week in the bathtub of her Texas home, and asked for help in locating him.

The Edna City Police Department released a statement Sunday with a photo of the person of interest: a white man with dark hair and a beard wearing a black Volcom sweatshirt and a tattoo behind his right ear.

He also shared the image of the vehicle in which he is believed to have moved, a silver Ford Taurus whose model could be from 2010 to 2018.

"Preliminary investigations have revealed a person of interest and a vehicle involved," police said in the statement. The man "may have a tattoo behind his right ear," he said, without elaborating and admitting the images were of low quality.

"We are working to obtain any additional information to identify the person of interest," officials said.

Here are some of the images police shared about the person of interest they are looking for in the case of Lizbeth Medina.

Lizbeth Medina was found dead, still in her pajamas, in the bathtub of the apartment where she lived with her mother, after she became concerned that the young woman never made it to the Christmas parade in which she was to perform with her team on December 5.

"I don't know if she suffered, if she screamed my name, I don't know anything and that's what kills me," Jackeline Medina, the young woman's mother, told Noticias Telemundo.

"I was dialing him, I was sending him messages and he didn't answer, which was something very strange," she said. She was the one who found her daughter's body in the bathroom, after returning home to look for her.

"And I see her little foot just coming out of the tub and I opened the curtains, and she was there," the mother lamented.

The young woman's family asked the community for help in finding the person responsible and insisted that if anyone had images from security cameras in the area to approach the police to share them.

Jacqueline Medina had her only child, Lizbeth, when she was 16 years old. Until a year ago, they lived in Grand Island, Nebraska, their aunt, Ana Medina, told NBC News. They moved to the town of Edna in 2022 when the mother got a job in renewable energy.

"My sister is inconsolable. Any mother would understand the pain she is going through," she said.

Edna is a small town of less than 6,000 people in Jackson County. The community has come together to honor the young woman's memory and support her family.

"Lizbeth was outgoing and confident," her aunt said. "She was always there for everyone, she was charming, young and full of energy."
