As a result of the thaw and heavy rain, water levels are rising dramatically in many places in Bavaria. The DWD and HND issue urgent warnings.
Munich – What happens to snow when it gets warmer again? It's melting. In Bavaria, a lot of snow fell last weekend, schools were cancelled, public transport came to a complete standstill in Munich, among other places. It is currently getting warmer again, which is causing the vast amounts of snow to melt - and in combination with the heavy rain, which is partly falling over the Free State, the water is rising dangerously.
Flood danger in Bavaria: Red alert at DWD and HND
The German Weather Service (DWD) and the Flood Intelligence Service of Bavaria (HND) are currently running red alert levels for the Free State. At the DWD, the "official severe weather warning for strong thaw" (level three) applies to most of the Oberallgäu district. "With positive temperatures and continuous rain, the snowpack thaws considerably. The discharge volumes reach between 90 l/m² and 140 l/m²," says the DWD warning. Meanwhile, an "official warning for thaw" (level two) applies to the entire south of Bavaria - up to 45 litres per square metre are possible here.

The experts from the HND are also keeping an eye on the dangerously rising water levels in the Free State. For the city and district of Bamberg as well as for the city and district of Coburg, the highest warning level in the warning map of the HND currently applies. "Flood warning for built-up areas," it reads. "Due to the onset of thaw in combination with the predicted precipitation, the water levels will rise again over the coming weekend," the experts write in justification.

For the night, the German Weather Service expects another deep spur over Bavaria. On Sunday afternoon and well into Monday, December 11, there will be stormy gusts and gale force winds. The thaw will also continue in the coming days – the flood situation will therefore remain tense. (FHZ)
