The tragedy shocked Spanish football. The match between Granada and Athletic Bilbao was suspended on Sunday after a fan of the home team suffered a respiratory crisis in the stands and died shortly after.
Athletic was ahead at 1-0 in the 18th minute when goalkeeper Unai Simón warned referee Miguel Ángel Ortiz Arias that there was an emergency in the stands. The teams left the field a few minutes later.

The stadium's and both teams' medical services provided support to the fan, who was taken to a hospital shortly afterwards in one of the ambulances at the stadium. About an hour later, he was reported dead.
"Granada CF vs. Athletic Bilbao suspended due to the sad death of a fan at the Estadio Nuevo los Cármenes. We accompany his family and friends, as well as all the Granada CF fans," the Spanish league said on social media.
