Their 21-month-old baby was found dead on the morning of Thursday, December 7, in the room of a former Formula 1 hotel in Épône (Yvelines). A 31-year-old man and his 28-year-old wife, who are also parents of two other children, have been remanded in custody following an investigation by the Yvelines departmental police.

"They have been indicted on charges of intentional homicide and habitual violence against a minor, by ascendant," the Versailles prosecutor's office told Le Parisien. The child's body showed several bruises.

The establishment welcomes precarious families

The drama unfolded in the couple's room on the ground floor of this establishment, which accommodates some 80 precarious families referred by the 115 services. The parents of the deceased baby, a boy, had fled Afghanistan. In the aftermath of the tragedy, emotions ran high among residents. "It's terrible what happened," said a resident we met upstairs.

A few hours after the news was announced, the mayor (LR) of Épône, Ivica Jovic, "very saddened by this tragedy", also evoked the difficult daily life of these families: "The reception conditions of this hotel are not ideal but the owner of the establishment and the services of the town hall are doing everything possible to support these families as best as possible"
