Cruise trouble: 2,600 guests cancel at short notice – "never happened in 30 years"

2023-12-22T04:02:04.820Z

Highlights: Cruise ship MSC Meraviglia had to change its route one day before departure due to bad weather. The ship sailed to Boston (Maine) and St. John in Canada instead of the Caribbean. A passenger of the cruise voiced his displeasure via Reddit. "Nothing like this has ever happened to me in 30 years of cruising," he said on the social media platform. A refund of travel expenses in the form of an MSC Cruises voucher was offered to passengers who did not want to come to terms with the course change.

Instead of the pleasantly warm sun, the guests of a cruise ship went north. Course change one day before departure. The anger is great.

Boston/Canada – Almost no one in life is immune to surprises. It's just stupid when they affect your own vacation and long-cherished plans suddenly become overboard. This is what happened in the case of the MSC Meraviglia, an ocean liner in the service of the Italian cruise company MSC Cruises. Just one day before departure, the guests were surprised by the cruise ship with a change of plans.

Cruise ship changes route one day before departure – passenger gives free rein to trouble

As reported by t-online, among others, a trip to the Caribbean was planned. Just right during the cold winter months, many of the passengers of the MSC Meraviglia probably thought. But then the weather changed and the MSC was forced to set course for Canada. North instead of south, plenty of snow instead of sipping cocktails by the water.

A guest of the cruise already gave free rein to his frustration via Reddit. On the social media platform, the disappointed passenger does not mince his words – and on top of that, he attaches the message from the cruise company, in which the concrete reasons for the change of course are addressed.

Canada instead of the Caribbean: MSC Meraviglia has to change course spontaneously – because the weather is too bad

On the coast of Florida, but also in the Bahamas, bad weather would have caused the spontaneous change of course of the MSC Meraviglia. Wind speeds of over 40 knots (about 75 km/h) would have made it almost impossible to dock and cast off from the destination ports. The danger to crew and guests would have been too great.

That's why a new plan had to be found without further ado – and a route that led in exactly the opposite direction. The cruise ship sailed to Boston (Maine) and St. John in Canada. A refund of travel expenses in the form of an MSC Cruises voucher was offered to passengers who did not want to come to terms with the course change. This was also the attitude of the guests of another cruise, where the ocean liner was too dirty to dock.

"Nothing like this has ever happened to me in 30 years of cruising": Disappointed passenger asks about similar experiences

For the disgruntled passenger who voiced his displeasure on Reddit, this was apparently not enough. "Nothing like this has ever happened to me in 30 years of cruising," he said on the social media platform. He made no secret of his perplexity and wanted to know about possibly similar experiences of other cruise connoisseurs.

"The same thing happened to me during Hurricane Matthew. Instead of going to the Caribbean, we headed north from New York. We were disappointed too, but went on board anyway. It was the best cruise of my life," reads a small testimonial in the comments. The reason for this was that half of the passengers had postponed their journey. So the ship was only half full, so the experience was all the better.

"Lucky. 40 knots of wind force are not without. Enjoy the voucher. You wouldn't have wanted to experience that," it says at a different silence and as a direct hint to the questioning Reddit user. True to the motto: Be happy how it turned out. Meanwhile, frustration also arose among the cruise passenger, who criticized an alleged food rule.

Wrong wardrobe due to misinformation: Cruise passengers prepare for the Caribbean – and land in Canada

Overall, the situation for European passengers was even more difficult. For example, an anonymous German tourist reported that she herself, as well as other Europeans, had not received any mail from MSC. It was only when they were on the cruise ship that they found out about the change of route.

Unfortunately for the uninformed passengers of the MSC Meraviglia: they had completely aligned their journey with the actual destination of the cruise, i.e. the Caribbean. Accordingly, her wardrobe consisted of summer dresses, skirts and bikinis. Not ideal with five degrees and strong winds aboard the ship during the stay in Boston. In the end, 2,600 of the original 5,400 guests were supposed to cancel their trip on the cruise ship. Canada? Not with them. Meanwhile, passengers were confronted with hellish temperatures on a cruise that turned out to be the purest hellish journey. (han)
