The Participation Advisory Board of the City of Germering is entering its second term of office – with six new members. At the inaugural meeting, however, one thing became clear: the advisory board still needs to become much better known.

Germering – The Frisbee golf course in Westpark is his thing. But the Participation Advisory Board has much more up its sleeve than the inclusive leisure activities that opened in September 2022. The committee with its twelve members also has projects in the areas of living, working and mobility on its list.

The fact that six new members want to get involved in the Participation Advisory Board, which is elected until 2027, has caused great joy for the re-elected chairwoman Ortrun Obermeier. "It brings together a lot of new ideas and experiences. I'm very excited to see what's on the way."

Lord Mayor Andreas Haas has a lot of confidence in the twelve committee members: "You have so many resources," said the head of the city. It is important to take advantage of this. The five women and seven men want to use part of their volunteer energy to not only straighten out the image of the Participation Advisory Board. "We need to bring it to the public even more," says Obermeier. Even in her own circle of acquaintances, people cannot classify the work of the advisory board, reports the chairwoman.

Participation applies to all ages

Others are still too attached to the clichés that many people associate with a disability and senior citizens' advisory board, Obermeier believes. The Participation Advisory Board was formed from these two bodies in 2019 – because it was difficult to find members and there were also too many overlapping topics. "However, participation does not only begin with a certain age or diagnosis," emphasizes Obermeier.

Barrier-free access is also important for a young person who is only temporarily restricted after an accident. "At the doctor's, at the town hall or when shopping," Obermeier says. Cobblestones not only make it difficult for those who are dependent on a walker to get around, but also for parents with strollers.

In the case of Rudolf Lobensteiner, the chairwoman is knocking down open doors. Although he is new to the advisory board, he is what you would call an old hand when it comes to dealing with the city of Germering and its administration. He regularly speaks out on environmental and traffic problems. He does the same in the constituent session. "We should seek cooperation with the other advisory boards, especially with the Youth Advisory Council," advises Lobensteiner. The more you approach others and seek exchange, the greater the chance of being noticed by the public.

Courage for more publicity

After a "very personal experience", Lobensteiner himself decided to get involved with the Participation Advisory Board. In a curative education home, he had experienced a couple of parents who had placed their child there, but felt insecure about further help options. "Helping is important and the togetherness in everyday life is to recognize who needs help and, on the other hand, not to be afraid to ask for help." The Participation Advisory Board must also convey this, explains Lobensteiner. "But that requires even more courage to go public."

This will already be the case for at least two events in 2024. On February 3rd, together with Fun Unlimited, an event for seniors will be organized. In addition, the mobility day with walker races, which literally fell into the water in September, is to be made up for in spring.

In the meantime, the Participation Advisory Board is completing its mandatory programme. A vice-chairman and a secretary have not yet been elected. Social affairs officer Herbert Sedlmeier had advised that this should not be done until the next meeting. Before assigning further positions, the members should get to know each other.

The Participation Advisory Board consists of the chairmen Ortrun Obermeier, Bernd Dittrich, Heike Hunneshagen, Gerd Kern, Rudolf Lobensteiner, Regina Meissner, Georg Schneck, Ludwig Schweiger, Peter Spendler, Gert Strassacker, Christine and Ine Zwilling. The next meeting would be held on 16 January 2024.
