The family of Savanah Soto, the pregnant Latina teenager who was killed in San Antonio, Texas, in what investigators believe was a narcotics deal "gone wrong," insisted Thursday, after the arrest of two suspects, that she did not use drugs and was under the coercive influence of her boyfriend. Matthew Guerra, 22, who was found dead next to her.

The San Antonio Police Department arrested and charged early Thursday morning against a father and son in connection with the killing of the young woman, who was about to give birth, and her partner in December. The bodies were found shot in Guerra's car just after Christmas.

Christopher Preciado, 19, was charged with murder punishable by death or life in prison, while his father, Ramon Preciado, 53, was prosecuted for abuse of a corpse for allegedly helping move the bodies.

Sgt. Washington Moscoso said at a news conference that Soto's family raised the alarm about her disappearance when she missed an appointment to induce labor, a procedure usually offered to women who are past their due date or if there is a medical risk.

"It appears to be a narcotics-related business gone wrong," Moscoso told reporters early Thursday. Soto didn't use drugs and was even sensitive to second-hand smoke, his brother Jordan Corona told NBC News.

Corona said she was also not aware that her sister's boyfriend had used drugs, but she was concerned about their relationship because she felt he was abusive to her.

"My sister was a sweetheart. He didn't even like to be around smoke," Corona said. "I guess it was one of those situations that happens in the wrong place at the wrong time. She avoided that kind of thing [drugs]. Of course, her boyfriend was the way he was, but as far as her was concerned, [getting involved with drugs], no," she added.

"you, you betrayed me"

Guerra was arrested on Christmas Day 2022 for punching Soto.

The doorbell camera caught Guerra kicking Soto in the face after yelling at him, "you, you betrayed me," according to a San Antonio police report shared with NBC News.

"[Guerra] then began punching [Soto] in the face with his closed fist four times on the left side of his face," the report adds. Soto told detectives Guerra then stood next to her and kicked her "in the face multiple times," according to the police report.

"It was an abusive relationship, we didn't condone it," Corona said of her sister and her boyfriend. "We try to tell him, 'You don't have to put up with that.' Of course, at that age, you feel like you know everything. Love is powerful at that age. We couldn't separate them," he said.

Guerra was placed on probation after he failed to plead to the charge of assault causing bodily injury to his partner, court records showed.

Guerra's defense attorney, Christopher Castro, said the couple were "together as soon as they could get back together."

Castro also said he is not aware of his former client having a drug problem. The couple appeared to be on good terms despite the disturbing elements of the 2022 Christmas Day incident. "I can tell you that every time I called Matthew, Savanah was with him," the attorney concluded.

A "complex" crime scene

Soto and Guerra were found Dec. 26 in the young man's Kia Optima, but the alleged killings occurred five days earlier, shortly before midnight on Dec. 21, police said.

Investigators aren't sure where they happened, but police said they were shot dead and then taken to the spot where they were found. Soto's cell phone played a pivotal role in guiding police to the suspects' car.

"It gives us a little peace to know that my sister's little family, that the person who killed them, is going to justice," said Corona, a 30-year-old warehouse supervisor. "Nothing will fill the void of not having her and my nephew around," he added.

Soto's death came 19 months after his 15-year-old brother, Ethan Soto, was also shot and killed in what has been described as a dispute over money.

"The baby will be in your arms"

It's still too early in the court process for prosecutors to decide whether to charge Christopher Preciado in the death of Soto's unborn son, who would be named Fabian, Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said in a statement Thursday.

"Under Texas law, an unborn child is included in the definition of a person. Therefore, Christopher Preciado may be charged with an additional charge of capital murder for the death of baby Fabian," Gonzales explained. "The Prosecutor's Office will wait for the archiving of the full investigation of the case to thoroughly review the facts and make the corresponding charging decisions," he said.

Soto's family hopes charges will soon come in the unborn son's death. "We're going to bury her with her baby in her arms," Corona said. We won't let her rest with the baby in her stomach. He was a full-term baby. The baby will be in your arms."
