After North Korea fires shells, Seoul calls on residents of Yeonpyeong Island to get to safety.
Seoul – South Korea has ordered the evacuation of Yeonpyeong Island after North Korea fired around 200 shells off its west coast. "Around 200 shots were fired by North Korea (near) Yeonpyeong Island," a South Korean Defense Ministry official said at a press conference. Representatives of the island, which is only about <> kilometers off North Korea, told the AFP news agency that residents had been asked to get to safety. It was a "preventive measure".
North Korean state media had previously reported that leader Kim Jong Un had called for an expansion of the production of rocket launchers during a factory visit in preparation for a "military showdown" with South Korea and the United States.
Shortly before, the U.S. government said North Korea had recently supplied Russia with ballistic missiles and rocket launchers, some of which had been used in the recent attacks on Ukraine. (AFP/SKR)
