For almost 20 years, Rainer Hunold has been the title character in the Friday crime thriller “The Public Prosecutor”.

Now he's stopping.

The actor wants to work exclusively as a sculptor in the future.

Wiesbaden - Actor Rainer Hunold (74) is leaving the ZDF crime series “The Prosecutor”.

A spokesman for the station said this on Monday at the request of the German Press Agency in Berlin.

“Rainer Hunold approached us with the wish to shoot the last episodes as “Prosecutor” in 2024.

ZDF would like to thank him for the trusting, successful collaboration and is pleased that he will be available for another season in 2024.” The series regularly reaches between five and a half and six million viewers on Friday evenings.

“Believability and authenticity were always important criteria for the characters I played,” said Hunold in an interview for the second on the occasion of the new series season from mid-February.

“In view of my age, I have therefore decided to retire the Wiesbaden public prosecutor Bernd Reuther, whom I played in over 120 episodes.”

The 74-year-old emphasized: “I want to prevent the inevitable age limit for lawyers in “real life”, which I have long since exceeded privately, from damaging the credibility of the character I love at some point.

I look back gratefully on decades of successful collaboration with ZDF and the production company Odeon Fiction and look forward to the next phase of my life, which I will dedicate exclusively to sculpture, my second great passion.”

The series “The Prosecutor” is set in Wiesbaden and originally began on ZDF in 2005 as a television film, which was later expanded into a series on Friday evenings.

Hunold has been there as the main protagonist and title character since the first case.

“We are already in discussions about the further development of the broadcast slot,” explained the ZDF spokesman.

The 19th season of “The Public Prosecutor” starts on February 16th at 8:15 p.m.

In addition to Hunold in the role of senior public prosecutor Bernd Reuther, Anika Baumann can be seen as Chief Inspector Julia Schröder and Jannik Mioducki as Chief Inspector Alexander Witte.
