It is important to explain that the US State Department classifies each country according to one of four levels: the first: "use normal caution", the second: "use extreme caution" which was announced for the Dominican Republic, the third: "reconsider travel", and the fourth "do not travel". This classification changes from time to time according to policy and security developments.
The warning comes several months after a 74-year-old tourist drowned during a trip while on a local boat.
"There is a fear of the activity of unregulated vessels, which may not be properly regulated or maintained," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned.
