A wrong diagnosis from the doctor may have saved Peter Maffay's life.

The singer now makes a surprising confession.

Tutzing – Peter Maffay has become an integral part of the German music landscape.

The native Romanian has been on stage for over 50 years and can look back on countless number 1 albums.

In addition, the now 73-year-old is always committed to a good cause and always shows his big heart.

Typical rock star attitudes are less likely to be attributed to Maffay.

At least nothing is known about excessive parties in the backstage area.

And yet the singer can talk about a major vice that accompanied him for a long time.

He was only able to overcome this by visiting a doctor.

Maffay is once again revealing a secret.

Misdiagnosis at the doctor changes Peter Maffay's life: singer quits smoking

Peter Maffay would have experienced the greatest shock moment of his life at the end of the 80s.

As he revealed to

, he was diagnosed with lung cancer during a visit to the doctor.

“That was a misdiagnosis, but it made my heart sink so much that I said to myself, if this cup passes me by, I'll stop,” said the singer himself.

Maffay is alluding to his excessive smoking behavior.

The chain smoker at the time would have sworn off lung rolls almost overnight.

To this day he has remained strong and no longer smokes cigarettes.

The singer also associates his decision to remain smoke-free and thus stay away from nicotine with one of his favorite bands.

When Peter Maffay supported the Rolling Stones - and was pelted with beer cans

This refers to the Rolling Stones, who released another studio album with “Hackney Diamonds” at the end of October 2023 after 18 years.

Maffay would also have another story associated with the Stones around frontman Mick Jagger (80) - albeit a rather unpleasant one on the surface.

In 1982, the iconic rockers also gave six concerts in Germany as part of their European tour.

Among others, Peter Maffay and his band had the honor of appearing as a support act.

However, for Maffay, who occasionally suffers from text deficiencies, this opportunity quickly turned into a nightmare.

“Tomatoes and all sorts of things flew onto the stage,” said the singer.

The Stones fans weren't too impressed with his music.

Beer cans and eggs were also thrown at him at other Stones concerts.

Ultimately, the singer and his band didn't let it get them down and even took something positive from the negative experience.

“It was the best lesson we could have learned.

I think if we hadn't gotten our act together, we would have become megalomaniacs."

A lesson for life - just like the visit to the doctor that persuaded Maffay to give up smoking.
