More and more Germans are suffering from alcohol addiction.

This emerges from a current study.

The numbers for Bavaria, however, are surprising.

Munich – Alcohol addiction is still widespread in Germany.

In 2022, more people with alcohol addiction received outpatient or inpatient treatment.

This was the result of a current study by the Barmer Institute for Health Systems Research (bifg).

According to this, around 1.06 million men and 467,000 women sought treatment for alcohol addiction.

Worrying trend: Alcohol addiction in Germany is increasing, according to a study

According to a statement, people in the second half of their lives were particularly affected: around 303,000 men and 116,000 women aged 55 to 64 were diagnosed with alcohol addiction in 2022.

“Alcoholism usually develops over many years,” says Christoph Straub, CEO of the Barmer health insurance company.

“It is important that those affected seek and receive appropriate help.”

Researchers have observed a worrying trend in recent years: the number of people being treated for alcohol addiction has increased slightly.

In 2017, according to the report, 1.02 million men and 453,000 women nationwide were proven to be alcohol dependent.

Regional differences in alcohol addiction: Bavaria is doing better than expected

However, there are sometimes clear regional differences in the statistics.

And a surprise for Bavaria.

The Free State is below the national average (see graphic): 1.62 percent of Bavaria, which corresponds to around 217,000 people, were treated for alcohol addiction in 2022.

In the nationwide ranking this means 5th place.

Fewer alcoholics in the south, more in the north: In Germany there are sometimes large regional differences, as a study by the Barmer Institute for Health Systems Research shows.

“The massive regional differences in alcohol dependence cannot be explained purely medically.

Socio-demographic factors are also likely to play a role here,” explains Barmer boss Straub.

The alcohol-free meeting place has been a place of help for addicts for 35 years.

Then there was a threat of closure.

After months of negotiations, the meeting will remain in place in 2024.
