In the USA, the fight for the presidential candidacy is in full swing.
The primary election system is complex and fraught with challenges.
Washington, DC – The United States is preparing for the presidential election on November 5, 2024.
Current President Joe Biden is seeking re-election, while Donald Trump is seeking the presidency again.
Although the election campaign is already in full swing, the actual day of the 2024 US election is still a long way off.
Because before the actual election takes place, the so-called primary elections must be carried out in the USA.

Primaries of the 2024 US election: process and formats
The primaries in the USA serve to determine the candidate for the respective party in the presidential election.
Here we provide an overview of the dates and process of the primaries.

There are two different formats for US primaries: caucuses and primaries.
Essentially, these are two different methods that voters in each U.S. state use to elect delegates.
Caucus and Primaries: Two different systems in use in US primaries
In the primaries, registered voters have the opportunity to directly choose which candidate that state's delegates should vote for at the national party convention.
Either only the registered voters of a party (closed primary) or all registered voters (open primary) are allowed to determine the presidential candidate.
In contrast, in the caucus, local delegates are elected, who then, in several successive steps, appoint delegates for the national party conference at further supra-regional meetings.
The caucus also features lectures and discussions among participants, which take place on the same day and precede the actual election.

The US area code system is complex
Compared to other voting procedures, the primary election system in the USA is quite complex overall.
What is consistent, however, is that delegates are elected who have decided on specific candidates.
These delegates then attend the nomination conventions of both parties in the summer and are, in most cases, required to vote in accordance with their mandate.
Primary elections begin in Iowa
Traditionally, the caucuses in the state of Iowa in January 2024 are the first primary election events in the USA.
In the 2024 US election, the Republicans will hold the first primary election in Iowa on January 15th.
The Democrats' first vote will begin by post on January 12, 2024 in Iowa, but the result will not be announced until March 5, 2024 as part of the so-called "Super Tuesday".
This has to do with the fact that an earlier date in January would have violated the Democratic primary plan for Iowa.
“Super Tuesday” is the most important date of the primaries
The so-called “Super Tuesday” is the day on which a large number of primary election events take place simultaneously in different states.
It will take place in this US election on March 5, 2024.
This time the following states are holding their primaries on Super Tuesday:
Alabama
Alaska
American Samoa
Arkansas
California
Colorado
Maine
Massachusetts
Minnesota
North Carolina
Oklahoma
Tennessee
Texas
Utah
Vermont
Virginia
Delegates from the primary choose presidential candidates
Based on the results of the caucuses or primaries, each state sends a set number of delegates to the Democratic and Republican nominating conventions, known as “national conventions.”
The Democratic convention will take place between August 19 and 22, 2024, while the Republican convention is scheduled for August 15-18, 2024.
At the end of the party conventions, a presidential candidate from the Democrats and the Republicans will be officially nominated.
These two will then compete against each other in the presidential election on November 5, 2024.
