Expert Dudenhöffer believes that the federal government is driving German car manufacturers to ruin with its policies - and is demanding consequences.

Munich - It was an ambitious goal that the traffic light coalition formulated when it took office at the end of 2021: there should be 15 million electric cars on the road in Germany by 2030.

But development is currently progressing slowly.

“Car pope” Ferdinand Dudenhöffer blames the federal government for this.

He believes that car manufacturers will increasingly rely on combustion engines again in the future.

According to figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority, a million electric cars were registered in Germany at the end of 2022.

If you add the new registrations in 2023, you get a maximum of 1.54 million vehicles.

Of course, it is impossible to predict how new registrations will develop this year.

But Dudenhöffer sees the mobility transition as a distant prospect and heavily criticizes the federal government.

“We need new elections!

I no longer trust the challenge of this traffic light,” said the economist in an interview with

She “destroyed the German car manufacturers with her cloak and dagger campaign in December”.

Dudenhöffer is referring to the sudden cancellation of the state environmental bonus for electric cars.

The result is a “ruinous discount battle” that could “bring the entire electromobility in Germany to its knees”.

He cited VW as an example.

“Last year, Volkswagen offered the ID.3 for 43,000 euros, now for 33,000 euros.” This means that the company is deep in the red, was Dudenhöffer’s assessment.

The industry expert vehemently called for the automotive industry to be strengthened.

He predicted that German companies would lose out in competition with China and Tesla because they “produce large volumes and therefore have large cost advantages.”

Tesla alone has already sold 1.8 million electric cars.

In addition, the People's Republic is “massively” subsidizing electric cars and thus driving global success.

The federal government must return to funding, also in order to restore trust in electric cars among the population.

Dudenhöffer is convinced that after a few months German manufacturers will again “put all their effort into the highly profitable internal combustion engine”.

If one starts, the others will quickly follow suit.

“Germany’s car manufacturers no longer take the chatter of Robert Habeck (Federal Economics Minister, ed.) and Co. seriously anyway,” complained Dudenhöffer.

The “car pope” also criticized the traffic light for setting the wrong priorities when it comes to technologies.

Habeck has conceded the national strategy to build a fast-charging structure and subsidies for battery research have been canceled.

“Things will be similar with the planned chip factories,” feared Dudenhöffer.

The traffic light is planning “one cloud cuckoo land after another”, but it doesn’t have a foundation for it.

After Dudenhöffer was kicked out by his own institute, he founded a new company.
