During power outages, authorities often communicate with the population via warning apps.

But what if the blackout lasts longer?

There is now an emergency radio for this in Bayreuth.

Bayreuth - The mayor at the radio microphone - not for casual sayings to set the mood or for music announcements, but for serious emergencies: The city of Bayreuth has created the technical possibilities to have a radio in the event of a large, long-term power failure. To be able to send emergency programs from the town hall.

The Franconian city was one of the first cities in Germany to launch such an emergency radio, the city announced on Tuesday (January 23).

In the past few weeks, the city administration's emergency power supply has been upgraded, a radio antenna has been installed on the roof of the town hall and the associated antenna installation has been relocated to the twelfth floor by the city's building construction department.

In the event of a blackout, the emergency radio could be put into operation to inform the population every half hour or hour - using the frequency of the local station

Radio Mainwelle

.

The necessary technology is provided by a Bayreuth IT, Internet and media service provider, the statement continued.

Citizens need radio without network operation

In order to actually receive the city's messages in emergencies, citizens would need a radio without mains operation, i.e. with battery, dynamo or solar operation, said Mayor Thomas Ebersberger from the CSU.

Ultimately, in the event of a long-term, widespread power outage, warning apps on smartphones would no longer help at some point, for example because the networks fail.

“Therefore, emergency radio is the best way for a city to provide its citizens with ongoing information in the event of a crisis like this, which we all hope never occurs – if necessary, 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Ebersberger continued.

On the website of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK), citizens can find tips on how to prepare for a power outage.

One piece of advice: Have a battery-operated radio or crank radio on hand so you can listen to messages from authorities in the event of a prolonged power outage.
