Enel's investments in Africa from 2016 to today amount to 2.4 billion euros and mainly concern solar and wind energy plants for a total of 2.1 Gigawatts of renewable power in addition to 0.4Gw from a gas plant.
A further 441 million euros have been committed to three new wind farms in South Africa.
In detail, the countries receiving the resources are: - South Africa, in the eight years around 1.5 billion euros have been invested for a total of around 1.25 Gw (almost 20% of all the country's renewable capacity) with seven wind farms and five photovoltaic.
- Morocco received approximately 850 million euros which concerned 384 MW relating to a gas plant (in partnership with the Moroccan utility Onee and Siemens Project Venture), of which Enel has started the sale of its share, and 850 MW of wind power (in partnership with Nareva and Onee) of which approximately 500 MW are in operation and another 300 MW in operation in 2024. 100 MW of wind power and 40 MW of photovoltaic power were then authorized.
- Zambia has received investments of around 40 million euros from 2019 to date for a 34 MW photovoltaic system.
- Algeria, a long-term gas import contract has been signed from Sonatrach (Algerian state oil company) for around 4 billion cubic meters per year.
- Ethiopia, in 2018 was awarded 120 MW of photovoltaic power, which has not yet been built.
