Eni confirms the decision to build the third biorefinery in Italy in Livorno, a project for which an Environmental Impact Assessment application was submitted in November 2022. Eni is awaiting the completion of the authorizations.
This is reported in a note from the group which recalls that "the conversion of the Livorno industrial site, on the model of what was already achieved in 2014 in Porto Marghera and in 2019 in Gela, confirms Eni's decarbonisation strategy".
Strategy, he continues, aimed at "carbon neutrality by 2050 and to increase biorefining capacity from the current 1.65 million tons per year to over 5 by 2030".
In line with the decision to convert the Livorno refinery, which will ensure a productive and employment future for the site, Eni has interrupted crude oil imports and has consequently started to shut down the lubricating production lines and the topping plant. The distribution of fuels in the area will be guaranteed by the importation of finished and semi-finished products".
The construction of three new plants for the production of hydrogenated biofuels is planned: a pre-treatment unit for biogenic charges, a 500 thousand tonnes per year Ecofining plant and a plant for the production of hydrogen from methane gas.
