Whether it's a fire or an accident, snowfall or flooding, the fire brigade will be on site within a very short time.

The Garching volunteer fire department had 550 missions last year.

Garching - To do this, the volunteers leave their jobs, forego their free time and often put their own lives at risk.

The majority of the 550 Garching operations were carried out by first responders (229 operations), followed by road traffic accidents (53), technical assistance (51), alarms through fire alarm systems (49), water damage (37) and apartment openings (28), like the commander Christian Schweiger calculated.

Only then do fires (23) and animal accidents (17) follow.

Ten people revived

On average, the Bluecoats are on site in four minutes.

The 45-strong first responder team carried out ten resuscitations last year, and four people were successfully resuscitated at the scene.

“An achievement that enormously increases the quality of life and safety of the citizens in Garching,” says Schweiger.

In addition to the “classic” alarms, such as a house fire or traffic accident, there are now also numerous operations that result from extreme weather situations.

Schweiger documented two large wildfires that started due to drought and intense heat, the heavy snowfall in December last year and the water damage that occurred due to increased groundwater.

Young talent from consistent youth work

On the other hand, emergency calls are something to smile about, such as when a large poisonous snake “turns out to be an old, black leather belt.” But such missions also lead to the impressive total of 14,756 hours for missions, exercises, training and work services, which amounts to 79 Distribute firefighters and 14 women on active duty.

“The number of those leaving has not been fully absorbed, we have eight fewer comrades than last year,” said Schweiger, but we are still relying on new blood from the consistent youth work, which begins with fire safety education at kindergarten age.

The fact that three school classes with 140 students and three kindergarten groups with 60 children visited the fire station last year proves that the fire brigade is still “pulling”, but also that the open day was “an incredible visitor attraction”.

Two vehicles are eagerly awaited

In order to be able to carry out the tasks, the fire department is desperately waiting for two personnel transport vehicles to be replaced, “with unfortunately endless delivery times,” says Schweiger.

The long-awaited new fire station is now finally under construction, and the shell is scheduled to be completed in the fall.

Until the move, vehicles and equipment must remain in warehouses rented by the city.

It is also necessary to switch to “110 digital alarm devices”, which will cost 58,300 euros.

The entire team is also gradually being equipped with replacement clothing; 20 pairs of trousers and jackets are still outstanding, and 36 old respiratory protective devices also need to be replaced.

“The city will always keep its fire departments operational with the most modern equipment,” emphasized Mayor Dietmar Gruchmann (SPD).

For this purpose, 522,000 euros are set aside in the administrative budget and 14.2 million in the asset budget.

That's ten percent of Garching's total budget and a very good expression of appreciation: "You give everything for the city, and we'll make sure we can do everything possible for you."

There were no changes in the new board elections; Johannes Kick and Stefan Oberauer were re-elected to their positions as board members.
