Highlights: Ideas for the asphalt desert: site visit at the Hindenburgstrasse intersection. The project is very ambitious, as became clear at an on-site visit on Saturday. The offset junctions of Bairawieser Straße and Mühlgasse should be included in the planning. There was also the suggestion that more trees, more greenery and more seating should be added to the area. A key term at the appointment was “quality of stay”. The busy, wide intersection, which is not safe for pedestrians, with traffic lights and wide turning lanes should be replaced by a roundabout.

The intersection of Hindenburgstrasse and Nockhergasse is currently an asphalt desert.

On-site appointment at the Hindenburgstrasse intersection: The city invited everyone interested to come up with ideas for the redesign.

Bad Tölz – It is certainly not one of the showpiece places in Bad Tölz: the intersection of Hindenburgstrasse with Nockhergasse and Wachterstrasse.

That's why, after the redesign of the Jahnstraße/Bairawieser Straße/Höhenbergweg junction in the north of Bad Tölz, the city also wants to fundamentally redesign this asphalt desert in the center.

The offset junctions of Bairawieser Straße and Mühlgasse should be included in the planning.

Mayor: There is no finished plan

The project is very ambitious, as became clear at an on-site visit on Saturday, to which the city invited residents, the city council and experts from the administration.

Mayor Ingo Mehner made it clear that there is no finished planning yet, but that we are only at the very beginning: So far there has only been a call for tenders to award the planning contract to a specialist office.

The well-attended meeting on Saturday was, for the first time, about inviting everyone interested to participate and “collect ideas” on how this exposed public hub in the center could be redesigned better, safer and also more visually appealing.

Mind you, it was only about the traffic area, but not about the architectural sins on the edge, such as the telecommunications exchange with its large advertising boards.

There should definitely be a roundabout with crossing aids

A key term at the appointment was “quality of stay”.

Mehner saw a need for action in many respects, but only made one fixed requirement: The busy, wide intersection, which is not safe for pedestrians, with traffic lights and wide turning lanes - hundreds of children pass here on their way to school every day - should be replaced by a roundabout with crossing aids become.

Everyone present then had the opportunity to present their personal suggestions and ideas or to submit them in writing using the cards handed out by town hall spokeswoman Birte Otterbach.

Include the Ellbach in the planning

On behalf of the historical association, Claus Janßen emphasized the special significance of this location and expressed the wish to transform the Ellbach, which rushes past in an ugly concrete corset with a steep gradient, into an attractive urban development element.

“It was built in the 12th century as an artificial diversion canal from the Rehgraben, once powered numerous mills and thus created the conditions for the Tölz market to emerge here,” he emphasized.

With reference to similar initiatives in other old towns such as Weilheim, Janßen had the idea of building a mill wheel based on historical models for sustainable electricity generation here in the area of the former “hammer forge”.

Lots of ideas for designing the intersection area

There were further discussion contributions and ideas on these topics: widening the sidewalks, which are sometimes far too narrow, and narrowing the roadways to slow down the traffic with speed limits, as well as more safety for cyclists (there was also the suggestion that car posers are often out and about in this area );

also more trees, more greenery and more seating;

A north-side access to the post office area (planned shopping market with underground parking) in order to reduce traffic from the direction of Marktstrasse.

Speed bumps are not possible

Furthermore, it was suggested that Bairawieser Straße be designated as a one-way street and that the pedestrian zone be extended to the southernmost part of Hindenburgstraße - with the option that the city bus no longer drives through the upper Marktstraße, but stops somewhere in the area of the telecommunications office.

Mehner expressly emphasized that some of these positions inevitably result in conflicting goals.

He only explicitly spoke out against the proposed installation of thresholds in the roadways because they would also be prohibitive for winter service.

Ulrike Bomhard pointed out a particular danger point at the narrow section of Bairawieser Strasse about a hundred meters above its confluence with Nockhergasse.

In addition, the subsequent “asphalt desert number two” (the greatly expanded and confusing widening towards the junction) should also be made more friendly.
