On Monday, a man believed to be Satoshi Kirishima, one of Japan's most wanted fugitives, died at age 70, just four days after surrendering.
Thursday, when police officers apprehended him, he had been taunting the authorities for… forty-nine years.
Satoshi Kirishima is the return of an era that is barely conceivable for young Japanese today, accustomed to a monotonous and consensual political life.
That of the 1970s, marked by far-left terrorism whose violence equaled, or even exceeded, that of its German or Italian “
comrades
” of the same era.
That of the Japanese Red Army for example, active for thirty years, between 1971 and 2001, on the home front as well as in the Middle East;
or that of the East Asian Anti-Japan Armed Front to which Satoshi Kirishima belonged.
For this last small group, as its name suggests, it was modern Japan that had to be eradicated...
