Schöffau – For 36 years, since 1987, Josef Mayr from Schöffau served the Oberland Costume Association based in Garmisch in various positions.

The Trachtengau now invited people to a festive event at the Lieberwirth inn, which was also provided with music by the Schöffau music band.

The occasion: The appointment of Josef Mayr as honorary board member and the farewell to other long-standing board members.

From an early age, “Berger-Sepp”, as he is called by his house name, was connected to the traditional costume issue.

He has already held positions at his home club, the “Wachtbichlern”, where he was second youth officer, Vorplattler, second and first board member and most recently an assessor.

Until he got involved in Trachtengau and initially held the positions of second and first Gauvorplattler from 1987-2008.

Under Georg Mangold, also an honorary district director, he was initially promoted to deputy director before taking over Mangold's position in 2011 for exactly 12 years.

The Oberland Traditional Costume Association has around 8,000 members with its 31 member clubs from Garmisch to Walchensee to Söchering and Peißenberg.

A lot of work has to be done for customs, customs and the preservation of the traditional mountain and folk costume.

For example, the organization of many traditional events such as Gaufest, Gaujugendtag, Gausingen and youth singing together with the commissioned clubs, the management of countless meetings and discussions, but also numerous representative tasks - all of this on a voluntary basis.

In addition to the district committee, almost all the chairmen of the associations, District Administrator Anton Speer, Mayor Andreas Weiß, the state parliament members Harald Kühn (CSU) and Susann Enders (FW), as well as Mayor Bastian Eiter from Wallgau came to this meeting.

Not without reason.

Anton Neuner (Wogner-Toni) from Wallgau was also one of those who was “promoted” to honorary Gau member status that morning with a magnificent certificate.

The wives of the honorees, who so often had to do without their husbands, were also invited.

There were also colorful bouquets of flowers as a small “compensation”.

Gau board member Stephan Märkl defined the term “volunteering” and associated it with Josef Mayr.

“Just like his predecessors, he carried out this social task in the common good.”

At the same time, District Administrator Anton Speer paid Mayr “the highest respect and recognition”.

Furthermore, honorary Gau member Andreas Funk was honored with a carved Gau sign on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

Franz Mangold from Bad Kohlgrub held the position of first district youth warden for twelve years.

He no longer stood for election in the last election and was bid farewell with a magnificent beer mug.

For his valuable services, Speer also honored him with the district's medal of honor in silver.

Anton Neuner was a member of the district committee for exactly 30 years and was rewarded with honorary membership for his services.

In addition to his last position as an area representative (2002-2023), Neuner also served on the committee as 2nd Gauvorplattler and 2nd Gaujugendwart for another 18 years.

The district administrator recognized Neuner as a “cornerstone of the traditional costume movement” and presented the district’s medal of honor in gold.

Hans Jais from Eschenloh, who also left and was “promoted” to the new honorary member of the Gau committee, spent 39 years on the Gau committee.

He was a regional representative for the Murnau area for twelve years and has always worked reliably as a regional press officer since 1996.

Speer described him as “unique” who was always there when you needed him.”

For his achievements, Speer awarded Jais-Hans, who had already been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, the District Medal of Honor and the District Medal of Upper Bavaria, the Garmisch-Partenkirchen District Medal of Honor in gold.
