The ex-left-wing politician's new party achieved double-digit results in election surveys in East Germany and sometimes ended up ahead of the traffic light parties.

Berlin – Ahead of the state elections in Thuringia, Saxony and Brandenburg in the fall, current election surveys indicate that forming a government will be a challenge in all three eastern German states.

In addition to the AfD, which has been polling strongly for years, Sahra Wagenknecht's new party (BSW) is now quickly gaining support, especially in Thuringia and Brandenburg.

If the current poll numbers remained, there would be no government coalition in Thuringia or Brandenburg from autumn onwards without one of the two parties as a coalition partner.

In Thuringia, for example, according to a current Insa survey on Wednesday, the AfD remains the strongest party with 31 percent, followed by the CDU with 20 percent.

After a surprising double-digit increase in the polls, the third strongest force is the new BSW with 17 percent, which performed better than the Left (15 percent), which has the incumbent Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow.

All three traffic light parties are in the single digits at six (SPD), five (Greens) and three (FDP) percent.

With her new party, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, the ex-left-wing politician is already achieving double-digit results in some East German states.

State elections 2024: The AfD is also the strongest force in Brandenburg and Saxony

The survey results in Brandenburg look similar.

Here too, the AfD leads an Insa survey on Wednesday with 28 percent, followed by the CDU with 18 percent and the SPD with 17 percent.

This is followed, again in double figures, by the Sahra Wagenknecht alliance with 13 percent.

The Greens achieved eight percent here, the Left six percent.

In Brandenburg too, the FDP would not reach the five percent hurdle at three percent according to current election surveys.

The most recent survey results for Saxony came from last week and saw the AfD with 34 percent, just ahead of the CDU with 30 percent.

The third strongest force in the Forsa survey was the Greens with eight percent, followed by the SPD with seven, the Left with six and the Wagenknecht party with 4 percent.

The FDP and free voters each had three percent.

The state elections in Thuringia and Saxony will take place on September 1st, the election in Brandenburg will follow on September 22nd.

Demand for ban proceedings: revelations and classification as “secure right-wing extremist”

After the AfD state associations in Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt, at the end of 2023 the Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Saxony also classified the AfD state association there as definitely right-wing extremist and emphasized that the party in the Free State was pursuing “anti-constitutional goals”.

This was justified with the “typical ethnic-nationalist positions”.

Since the news from the Saxon Office for the Protection of the Constitution and a recent investigation by the media network Correctiv, which revealed the xenophobic plans of part of the party, there have been renewed calls for rapid ban proceedings against the AfD on this basis.
