The Pöckingen fire department had to elect a new chairman at short notice at its annual general meeting.

Martin Ammer resigned.

Pöcking

– The Pöcking Volunteer Fire Department is a model of success.

Once again, she was not only able to increase the number of members in the club, the active group also grew significantly last year.

The downer: Chairman Martin Ammer has resigned from his position.

The decision was very difficult for Ammer.

Ultimately, he could not ignore the warning signals from his body, which had been suffering from the consequences of an infection with the corona virus for some time.

The chairman of the Pöckingen Fire Department Association resigned at the annual meeting on Friday evening.

“I can’t keep up anymore,” he told the more than 80 members in attendance.

He had to be temporarily represented for a long time because of a hospital stay.

And the long-term effects of the infection still have him under control, as he had to admit.

At the end of the meeting, in a modification of the original agenda, at the request of a club member, there was not the election of a new chairman for six years, but the by-election for the current term of office of the remaining board - and that ends in two years.

In a secret ballot, 73 of the 76 votes cast voted for the proposed candidate Hans-Peter Pletsch, with one no and two invalid ballot papers.

Because the person elected had previously been second chairman, this position had to be filled.

The only proposed candidate, Wolfgang Ott, received all votes by acclamation.

More members, more active people

In his last annual report, the outgoing chairman came up with some good news.

The number of club members has increased to 137 thanks to 17 new admissions.

“We are growing, that is a good sign,” explained Ammer.

The fire department is not following the negative trend in many other clubs.

Ammer sees the reason in the leadership work, in the harmonious cooperation with the mayor and the community and “with all of you,” he said.

Commander Josef Mörtl continued the series of positive news.

The task force has 98 firefighters.

Six active members joined last year.

The increase once again poses space problems for the fire department.

Just last year, a new wooden barn was built behind the town hall in place of an old shed, in which two fire engines are stored.

This created space in the neighboring fire station to set up additional lockers for those active.

Mörtl said there are currently only two of these boxes available.

The planned new construction of a tool shed is becoming increasingly urgent.

The need to put the project out to tender across Europe is not limited to the construction trades, but also includes the architectural services, explained Mayor Rainer Schnitzler.

It is a complex and time-consuming process.

The architectural firm “Degle.degle” in Königsbrunn was awarded the contract to plan the new fire station.

“I am sure that we have a competent partner at our side,” said Schnitzler.

Number of uses increases

The commander reported on a busy year.

The rescue workers had to be deployed 125 times in 2023, which was 15 more missions than in the previous year.

The active members worked 1,144 hours.

With the 87 exercises carried out, the firefighters worked 6,504 hours on a voluntary basis, around 2,000 hours more than in 2022. 65 percent of the missions were technical assistance, 30 percent were fires.

Mörtl praised his active troops for their outstanding practice ethic.

As an example, he cited a door-opening exercise last September that attracted 35 participants.

To the applause of the assembly, the commander expressly thanked all employers who release their employees for fire service.
