Germany is making its contribution and, if necessary, will “mobilize even more,” assured Lindner at the European Liberal Party Conference in Berlin.

Zelensky emphasizes help in the Ukraine war: “Good dynamics” in armaments aid

Update from January 27th, 9:11 p.m.:

Despite the current problems with arms deliveries, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky does not see any war weariness among his country's international partners.

“Despite various challenges and many difficulties, Ukraine has managed to maintain international attention for our, Ukrainian struggle for independence,” he said in his daily video address on Saturday.

In a review last month, he particularly highlighted the security agreement with Great Britain as a success.

Zelenskyj signed the agreement two weeks ago with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak during his visit to Kiev.

This agreement is now a model for security agreements with other countries that are in the works, he said.

Zelensky also spoke of “good dynamics” in international arms aid.

However, he emphasized the importance of the USA as the most important military supporter in the defense against the Russian war of aggression.

Kiev is waiting impatiently for the decision in Washington – “it is of crucial importance,” he warned.

In the USA, a domestic political dispute between Democrats and Republicans is paralyzing further aid for Ukraine.

After Russian attacks in eastern Ukraine: several dead people recovered from the rubble of a residential building

Update from January 27th, 7:43 p.m.:

According to the authorities, five dead people were recovered from the rubble of a residential building in eastern Ukraine.

“I remind you that on January 15, the Russians dropped a guided aerial bomb on a three-story building in Nyu York - three people were injured and five were buried under the rubble,” wrote the military governor of the Ukrainian-controlled part of the Donetsk region, Vadym Filashkin, on Facebook.

The rescue work would have taken two weeks.

The town of Nyu York is located in Ukrainian-controlled territory directly behind the front line opposite the industrial town of Horlivka.

In contrast to many other sections of the front, the Russian military has not yet succeeded in pushing back the Ukrainians at this point.

However, the town was badly damaged by the ongoing shelling.

Meanwhile, the death of another victim, a 13-year-old girl in Kharkiv region, became known.

The Ukrainian teenager was seriously injured ten days ago when the town of Malyj Burluk was shelled with aerial bombs and fell into a coma.

Now she has died in the hospital, the military governor of Kharkiv, Oleh Synjehubow, said on Saturday.

Putin attacks Ukraine and the Baltics – “Heroizing Hitler’s aides and SS men”

Update from January 27th, 6:41 p.m.:

Russian President Vladimir Putin described his war against Ukraine at a memorial event as a fight against Nazism.

“We are doing everything, everything, to stop Nazism and finally eradicate it,” he said, according to the media, on Saturday at the opening of a memorial for civilian victims of fascist terror after Hitler’s Germany attacked the Soviet Union.

The Kremlin chief cited Ukraine and the Baltics as current examples of the rise of Nazism.

The Baltic states are “declaring tens of thousands of people subhuman, depriving them of their most basic rights and subjecting them to hate speech,” he claimed, without providing any evidence for the statements.

Ukraine, in turn, “heroizes Hitler’s helpers and SS men and uses terror against people they don’t like,” Putin continued.

For almost two years, the Kremlin has repeatedly justified the war in Ukraine with the alleged need to protect the Russian-speaking population living there from attacks by Ukrainian nationalists.

Moscow now seems to want to build a similar narrative with regard to the Baltics.

Ukraine and Lithuania plan joint drone production

Update from January 27th, 5:15 p.m.:

Ukraine and Lithuania have discussed the joint production of drones.

A large part of his conversation with his Lithuanian counterpart Gabrielius Landsbergis was dedicated to this topic, said Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba on Saturday at a joint press conference between the two in Kiev.

“Lithuania has the technologies, we have the opportunity to expand cooperation, and that was the key issue,” Kuleba said.

In addition, Ukraine's path to NATO, further military aid for the country and sanctions against war enemy Russia were also discussed.

Update from January 27th, 4:12 p.m.:

There has apparently been a Russian drone attack in the city of Beryslaw in the Kherson region.

A civilian was killed,

Ukrainska Pravda

reported, citing the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office.

Houses and public buildings were also affected.

Russia wants to retake several places: Putin's army increases “storming operations”

Update from January 27th, 2:51 p.m.:

According to information from Kiev, the Russian military has enormously increased its efforts to conquer Ukrainian places in the past few days.

“The occupiers have significantly increased the number of attacks and storming operations - for the second day in a row the enemy is carrying out 50 combat operations,” wrote General Alexander Tarnavskyj, who is responsible for the sector of the front in the south and southeast of Ukraine, on his Telegram channel on Saturday.

The number of air raids has also increased.

The figures given by Tarnawskyj apparently refer to the southern part of the Donetsk region.

He explicitly mentions strikes against the towns of Myrnohrad and Novohrodivka, which are close to the front, and which were bombarded with converted anti-aircraft missiles the day before.

Heavy fighting for Avdiivka: “Russians are carrying out a three-pronged attack”

Update from January 27th, 1:00 p.m.:

In its latest intelligence report, the British Ministry of Defense states that the Ukrainian counterattacks prevented the Russians from taking full control of Avdiivka.

“The main focus of Russian forces is the city of Avdiivka,” the report said.

“The Russians are conducting a three-pronged attack to encircle the city from the south and north, and are also fighting on the outskirts of the eastern quarter of the city of Avdiivka itself.”

However, Russian forces have suffered heavy losses in personnel and armored vehicles, often caused by Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicle munitions.

Although they continue to try to bypass the Ukrainian fortifications, "Ukrainian counterattacks deter Russian forces from advancing further within the city."

Ukraine News: Russia's parliamentary leader warns of World War III

Update from January 27th, 11:40 a.m

.: Russia's parliamentary leader Vyacheslav Volodin has raised the danger of a third world war on the 80th anniversary of the end of the siege of Leningrad.

“Fascist ideology has become the norm for the leadership of NATO countries,” Volodin wrote on his Telegram channel on Saturday.

He accused Western governments, including explicitly the federal government under Olaf Scholz, of supporting a policy of genocide in Ukraine.

“This is a dangerous path that could lead to a new world war.”

Russia justifies its almost two-year war of aggression against Ukraine by claiming, among other things, that it has to “denazify” the neighboring country.

Russian President Vladimir Putin repeatedly uses historical comparisons with the Second World War to justify his attack on the neighboring country.

He equates the invasion of Ukraine he ordered with the defense of the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany's criminal war of aggression.

Especially on anniversaries, Moscow uses the argument of “defending the memory of the war dead” for its war propaganda.

Update from January 27th, 9:40 a.m

.: The plane crash in Russia continues to cause discussions.

Ukraine considers the information provided by Russia so far regarding the alleged shooting down of the Il-76 military transport aircraft to be unfounded.

There is still no evidence that there were actually 65 prisoners of war on board the Ilyushin, which crashed in Belgorod on Wednesday, said the head of Ukrainian military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov.

According to a statement from the coordination staff for the exchange of prisoners of war published on Friday (January 26), Russia provided a list of names after a long delay.

However, it is still unclear whether these people were in the Il-76.

“There is currently no information that would indicate that so many people could have been on that plane,” Budanov said.

Russian plane crash: Moscow releases footage

Update from January 26th, 8:45 p.m.:

After the Il-76 military transport plane crashed in the Belgorod region, the Russian Investigative Committee published videos with images of corpses and an airplane.

The recordings published in Moscow on Friday show investigators in a rubble field, closing a body bag and also showing tattoos on body parts.

Ukrainian documents from suspected prisoners of war can also be seen.

Another video shows a plane to which several transporters are heading.

According to authorities, this proves that the Ukrainian prisoners of war boarded the plane before it was shot down.

The videos could not initially be independently verified.

Russia is likely to want to refute Ukraine's doubts that there really were prisoners of war on board the Ilyushin when it crashed last Wednesday.

According to Russian information, the plane carrying 65 prisoners of war and 9 Russian crew members was shot down.

The collected body parts will be genetically examined in order to identify the people killed in the crash, it said.

According to Russian investigators, the plane was fired from an anti-aircraft system in the Ukrainian-controlled town of Lypzi in the Kharkiv region.

Update from January 26th, 6:30 p.m.:

Russian President Vladimir Putin has blamed the Ukrainian army for the crash of a Russian military aircraft in the border region of Belgorod this week.

“I don’t know if they did it intentionally or accidentally, but it’s obvious that they did it,” the Kremlin chief said Friday at a military college.

Putin further accused Ukrainian military intelligence of knowing that there were 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war on board the plane.

“It is definitely a crime,” he emphasized.

According to information from Moscow, the Ilyushin transport plane crashed on Wednesday not far from the border with Ukraine after being hit by rockets.

Accordingly, the plane with 65 Ukrainian soldiers on board was on the way to a prisoner exchange.

According to Russian authorities, all 74 passengers died in the crash.

Whether there were actually prisoners of war on board is still controversial.

Ukraine war: Kiev invites Xi Jinping to peace talks in Switzerland

Update from January 26th, 5:15 p.m.:

Ukraine has invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to peace talks in Switzerland.

This is reported by Sky News, citing Volodymyr Zelensky's top adviser, BiIgor Zhovkva.

Neither the place nor the time has been determined yet.

However, Switzerland has agreed in principle to hold such a meeting.

“We will definitely invite China to participate in the summit, at the highest level, at the level of the President of the People's Republic of China.

China's participation will be very important for us.

We involve our partners in the world to convey to the Chinese side the importance of participating in such a summit,” said Zhovkva.

Chinese participation in the talks could be crucial to ending the war.

While Beijing has remained close to Russia since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, it has previously offered to mediate in the conflict, saying the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries must be respected.

Xi remains one of Vladimir Putin's closest allies among major powers, and his views on a possible peace plan could prove crucial to the future of the conflict in Ukraine.

Update from January 26th, 4:10 p.m.:

The Tuapse oil refinery, which belongs to Rosneft, a major Russian oil and gas company, has stopped refining oil and producing petroleum products due to the attack by Ukrainian drones on January 25th.

This is reported

by Reuters

, citing industry sources.

The refinery is the only one on the Russian Black Sea coast, one of the ten largest in the country and processes up to nine million tons of raw materials annually.

A vacuum system burned down in the drone attack, which also prompted Russian authorities to close Sochi airport and issue air raid warnings for their settlements.

According to the agency, the plant will not be able to quickly resume production: repairs are expected to last until the end of February or early March.

Rosneft did not comment on this.

Russia is said to have used chemical weapons

Update vom 26.

Exchange of blows between Russia and Ukraine after plane crash

Now Ukraine and Russia have accused each other before the UN Security Council.

According to previous information, it was a “premeditated, well-thought-out crime,” said Russia’s deputy UN ambassador Dmitri Polyansky at a meeting of the body in New York.

The deputy Ukrainian ambassador to the UN, Chrystyna Hajovyshyn, rejected the allegations: Ukraine was not informed about the number and type of transport used to transport the prisoners who, according to the Russian account, were said to have died in the incident.

This week, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Lavrov also traveled to New York.

Ukraine News: Russia requests meeting in New York after plane crash

The UN Security Council meeting on the crash was requested by Russia.

Representatives of Western states emphasized at the meeting that the crash would never have occurred without Russia's war against Ukraine.

“Russia has repeatedly sought to shift responsibility for the tragedies of this senseless and self-imposed war onto others, as if it were the victim rather than the aggressor,” said U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the U.N. Robert Wood.
