On January 21st, the daughter of the heir to the Norwegian throne, Crown Princess Mette-Marit (50) and Crown Prince Haakon (50), turned 20 years old.
However, just a few days earlier, their military training began in the Skjold camp in Indre Troms.
Home leave wasn't possible even for a princess.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra's service with the Northern Brigade Engineer Battalion will last twelve months, as the Norwegian royal family announced last summer.
Instead of cake and presents, military drill awaited the second in line to the throne in Norway on her big birthday.
“To say the least: it will be a very different birthday for Princess Ingrid Alexandra.
As far as I know, the very first one without the parents, which probably feels strange for both parties,” royal expert Caroline Vagle told

“It is usually celebrated at home in Skaugum with gifts and cake in bed and visits from family and friends in the evenings,” Vagle says.
This year, however, Princess Ingrid Alexandra will probably have to make do with a serenade from the other recruits.

“We sing the birthday song while the birthday child is doing push-ups, and it is important that we sing as slowly as possible so that the person has to do many laps,” soldier Frida Berge-Urgård confirms to

It's no picnic for Mette-Marit and Haakon's daughter Ingrid Alexandra, who currently shares a room with five other recruits.
According to Berge-Urgård, ten rooms each share a shared bathroom.

Princess Ingrid Alexandra shouldn't expect any special treatment, even if Frida Berge-Urgård hopes for the new ones, “that they will be a good group and that they will have fun.
When you go on long walks and get wet and cold together, close and good friendships develop.” Not an easy time for Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who is in “total panic” about her children moving out.
